Lightroom Classic: Crop function unusable because of lag

Updated to latest Lightroom Classic on 4th Nov 2019. Crop function in develop module is unusable. Significant lag between moving drag handles and any response and poor resolution.

Thanks Victoria. Please give the following workaround a try:

  1. Open Lightroom.
  2. Invoke Lightroom > Preferences... menu command
  3. When the Preferences dialog appears, select the Presets tab.
  4. Click on the button labeled “Show All Other Lightroom Presets...”
  5. Lightroom will reveal the root preset folder in the Finder/Explorer.
  6. Now go to https://adobe.ly/2JW0JQA and download the config.lua file and copy it into the Lightroom preset folder that Finder/Explorer selected at step 5. 
  7. Relaunch Lr. 
  8. Invoke Lighroom>Help>System Info... menu command. If you’ve followed the above steps correctly, you should see an info section that shows the following

 

Config.lua flags: 

Develop.enablePostCropVignetteEffectDuringCrop = false

This worked thank you kindly. I would please clarify that in step 6 the file config.lua needs to be placed inside the lightroom folder that is in that root folder revealed by the "Show all Other lightroom Presets" button.

A few initial thoughts - 

- Did you reboot after updating Lr?
- Try changing your GPU settings in Preferences --> Performance tab --> User graphics processor and see if that makes a difference
- What OS are you running?

Rebooted several times.
Use graphics processor set to 'Auto' - as in previous version.

OS is Windows 10 with all updates installed.

Working fine for me in Win10 on 2 computers.  I'd suggest - 
- actually changing the GPU settings to see if it makes a difference (don't have to leave it that way - just trying to isolate the issue)
- updating your graphics card drivers
- resetting your preferences (https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html)
- post your system info (Help --> System Info)

First thing that stands out is your GPU driver.  You're running 391.25, which is pretty old.  441.12 is the current release.

I'd start by going to https://www.geforce.com/drivers and getting those drivers updated.

I do get the same lag and on the same GPU. Starting to think if it's a problem with that specific GPU. It's like you hold the corner handle, drag and you don't see the handle move until you stop dragging. Thing is, this happens with all GPU options but it's fine with GPU completely off(running on the latest driver).

Does the Lightroom>Edit>Preferences>Performance indicates the full GPU acceleration is available?

For me, yes GPU is fully up to date and yes, the GPU settings indicate full GPU acceleration.

The problem exists with both 391.25 and 441.12 GPU drivers, with either basic or full GPU acceleration enabled. Switching GPU acceleration off appears to resolve the problem. I'll use this solution for the time being.

Thanks a lot Simon for your solution...it worked also for me.

Same slowness and lag with GPU On, came out with version 9, I have during the dragging of the lines of the Upright Guided Tool.

If the popup zoom is on ("O" shortcut) the drawing of the line is extremely "laggish"; again turning off the GPU is much better.

Any workaround also for this issue ?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Lightroom Classic Crop Tool Non-responsive.

I'm actually trying here... a folder of only 6 selects (outputted from Capture One).. wanted to do some crop options, B&W options.. whatever... Crop tool is completely non responsive.. I wish I was like everyone else and have my problem solved with an update, but it never is. The worst thing is, this computer is purely a work machine.. this is all i do on it.. i built it for this purpose.. 
It could definitely be something wrong with my system, however... Capture One works 100% and is super responsive...

I’m seeing similar issues and am using Radeon 7 GPU. I’ll be in the Develop module and hit R on keyboard. The computer takes about 5-10 seconds to go into crop mode. 8700K cpu with 64GB ram. Will we ever see a Mac version of Lightroom written with Metal GPU code?

Just to be clear: the workaround only affect the cropping operation in v9.0 on some GPU hardware. The slowness in other parts of the program is not related to his particular crop issue.
