If Lightroom says the photos are missing, have you checked they're still on the hard drive?

yes. one folder shows empty in LR;  in finder shows 20 photos and I can open them on preview (file not corrupted)

Try importing those 20 photos through the Import dialog and see what error message you get, if any.

What happened to the other 3980?

i have organized the folder by year and it's missing 4000 when i tried to synchronize the whole folder

when i try to synchronize the first sub folder it says "no photos and video were found to import". When i right click "show in finder" it shows the 20 photos in my hard drive. ==> Bit background on the photos: they were all straight from the camera. Earlier today LR did manage to show 5 of the images (out of 25) and i manage to delete them.

You reorganized them outside of Lightroom? You understand that synchronize would remove all of the missing photos and then reimport them as new ones, without any of the work you'd done in Lightroom?

Synchronize not being able to import photos usually means the photos are already in the catalog somewhere else, and you had don't import suspected duplicates checked when you last imported photos, which is why I'm suggesting the import dialog.

But if this is a result of reorganizing, you're probably better to relink the photos rather than importing them afresh.

You can try to find one missing image by right clicking on missing image and select show in finder. Lightroom will show a dialog saying " Would you like to locate" and it will show you previous folder location from which you have imported. You can check that particular folder if images are present in that location or not.
Can you try to locate that particular image and post the behaviour?
