Lightroom Classic CC 7.x crashes on adding new folder containing more than 1850 images

Hi,

since LR Classic CC 7.x I can't add a folder (like D:\RAW) which contains more than 1850 images. If more images than 1850 then LR crashes.

If I use Files -> Import LR is working.

In LR 6. all works fine. In LR 7.0 and above chrashes.

Will there be a fix?

Regards, Stefan

Stephan,

I haven't seen any other reports of this.  Can you give us some system information?  Does it happen with all drives?  If the folder being added is not at the root-level of the drive does it still happen?

Hi Rikk,

it's a Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit Machine, 32 GB RAM, NVidia GTX 980 Graphics Card.

It happend to all folders which included more than 1850 Images. Whether or not if it is a root folder.

But I will try this on another computer

Good troubleshooting step.  I was able to import more than 5000 in my test.

Can you give me a screen grab of your Import Dialog so I can attempt to duplicate exactly what you are seeing?

Sure.

First I chosse "Folder" on the left pane of Library:

Then I choose "Add Folder" with the "+" on the right side:

Next I select a folder:

After that, Lightroom hangs:

No response:

Eventlog:

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Stefan

So far, Stefan, I am unable to reproduce what you are seeing and I haven't run across any other reports yet. Still investigating.

Hi Rikk,
I've tested a few times more. Adding a folder with more than 8000 JPGs. Work.
Adding a folder with more than 2900 TIFs. Work.

It seems that only my Canon RAW Files (*.cr2)  are affected. Hope, this helps.

Best regards,
Stefan

Just an Update

In Lightroom CC Version 6.3 my workflow works fine. After updating to this version:

Version von Lightroom: CC 2015.14 [ 1149743 ]
Lizenz: Creative Cloud
Spracheinstellung: de
Betriebssystem: Windows 10 - Business Edition
Version: 10.0.17134

my workflow doesn't work anymore. Like 7.x

Another update:
After intensive testing I think I've got it.

If I select a subfolder containing RAWs like the folder raw in f:\Photos\raw LR hangs

If I select the parent folder Photos in f:\Photos\raw it all works fine

Hope this helps.

Best regards, Stefan

Stefan, I'm sure Rikk will catch up with you when he gets back (Adobe US is closed this week) but a couple of questions that have crossed my mind in the meantime, since you've been such great detective work.

So just to confirm, Lightroom 6.3 worked fine, but it broke for 2015.14 (that's 6.14 equivalent) and all of the Lightroom 7.x versions?

What kind of drive is the F drive? Internal? External? NAS?

Hi Victoria,

yes, Lightroom 6.3 works fine, but 6.4 and all 7.x Versions doesn't.

F drive is a normal internal HD. But the problem also happend on external drives, SSDs and so on.

Best regards,
Stefan

Stefan,

I think, if you still have the 7.x version installed, it is time to do the import, let it crash and get a crash log from you.  Make sure that you use the Crash Reporter and make certain that your Adobe ID is included in the notes.  Let me know when it is ready and I will have an engineer look at it.

Hi Rikk,

sorry, but I can't use the Crash Reporter because it didn't start. The only logs I'have in my windows Eventlog.

Ok. That is a Windows dialog suggesting a non-responsive app. If you leave it sit for 15 minutes or so after checking the Wait option, does it ever come back?

With LR7.4 on Windows 7 I tried this with folder of 1915 jpegs. For the 1st test after selecting the folder to be added the import screen opened in 'add' mode but all I got was spinning circles instead of the photo thumbnails.I force quit LR after waiting a while and deleted .lock file and tried smaller folder then same
folder again. This time both folders populated the import screen with thumbnails. So was only able to create problem the one time.

?? I do not know if this is related or not or if I accidentally triggered something while getting LR to respond,  but after I did the first force quit of LR then Windows started adding all 1915 images as a desktop wallpaper slideshow. Since I had jpgs in this folder it succeeded but I but Windows may get stuck if these were RAW files? Again may be unrelated but was still weird thing to happen during the test.
