Lightroom Classic CC 7.1 so slow on 2017 iMac

I have used LR for 7 years and always been happy. I am running on a 2017 5k iMac with 48GB of RAM - performance is making it unusable - constant loading... then spinning beach ball. Sliders so jerky impossible to make fine adjustments. I have made all the recommended settings but still no improvement. ACR works fine. Please address this - looking at the forums I am far from alone in this.

When did it start behaving slowly?  When you updated to a specific version? or, When you updated your Mac?

I am seeing zero slowness in a 2017 vintage MBPr with only 16 GB of RAM - running High Sierra.

"2017 vintage MBPr"

It's only Jan. 12, 2018 ... how is a 2017 laptop considered 'vintage'?

me too, me too, me too. It's crazy making. Adobe makes believe we are the crazy ones. It's impossible to get through a few hours of work. I have to shut down everything, pull the plug and then start over and within a few hours it's back to the turning ball.

Have you checked "build smart previews" on your import dialog? Also, have you checked off "use smart previews for editing" in your preferences?

Thanks for the feed back - it started with 7.0 update. I thought my old iMac (2012) was struggling and took a black Friday deal to get a new iMac. Still the same problems with the new machine - if anything much worse. Smart previews seem to make no difference either way. I have made all the Adobe suggested performance settings including a 50gb cache. I even purchased a new thunderbolt 3 G-Raid as I thought maybe the firewire was throttling the speed.
On the suggestion of Victoria Bampton I turned off "use graphics processor" in performance preferences and this has really helped - not really speedy but better. It may be the 5k iMac graphics card is not compatible with Classic 7.0. Unbelievable that Adobe do not check the latest machines or at least advise us that there may be a conflict.
I also have LR Classic CC on a 2013 MBP which has no problems and gives acceptable performance. Unfortunately I am set up to do my editing on the iMac with access to my hard drives.
I use On1 2018 for detailed editing and this has no problems with my iMac at all and is really quick.
Very very frustrating as a one hour edit now turns into at least two hours or more.
Using LR CC on my iPad Pro is incredibly quick and it is obvious that is where Adobe are investing - unfortunately so many of us are invested in a workflow that needs LR Classic.
Lets hope 7.2 goes someway to sort this out.

I'm very surprised that using smart previews is slow. LR is working on much smaller images and should fly. Are you positive you ticked the edit using smart previews box in the performance tab of catalog preferencea.

I have identified the problem - LR 7.01 is not compatible with the graphics processor on the 5K iMac. Turning this off gives acceptable performance - I still find it odd this conflict should occur as surely Adobe must work closely with Apple during beta testing.
Lots of expense that could have been avoided looking for a solution which Adobe could have pointed out by updating their list of incompatible graphics cards.
And yes I have tried with smart previews on and off and any performance improvement was negated by the graphics conflict.

Jeremy, 7.01 is not the latest version. 7.1 was released in December. Have you tried it? Does it give you the same result with GPU off and on?

Sorry my error 7.1 is what I have installed. Only acceptable with GPU off.

Jeremy,

I have a similar spec iMac w. the 8K Radeon.  SSD etc etc.  Unacceptably slow.  I posted elsewhere.  It just was worse & worse.  I am starting to research alternatives at this time.  I know lightroom too well but this is unworkable.

Do you use a Wacom?  I tried changing all settings etc.

Last try will be a new Catalogue.

Me too. All the things everyone said above i'm experiencing too, on my 2017 4.2 Ghz 40mb RAM IMac. Running lightroom on my 2012 macbook pro is way faster than on my brand new shiny computer  I've got a super fast sony xqd card reader for my super fast sony xqd card, which is supposed to load photos into lightroom faster, and they load about 3 to 4 times slower than when I used an SDXC 1 card. Has anyone at Adobe acknowledged that there is indeed a major problem with Imac's running lightroom right now?

I experienced the same. spent $7000 on an iMac pro, and LR run better on my old 2011. I can't believe Adobe don't care , may be it is a fight wit Apple... I don't know... I started using Capture One and I think the made me a favor, it is way better soft! the best quality I've ever seen from the raw files!!
