Lightroom Classic: Cannot synchronize folder after reaching about 2000 images in that folder

Hi,

Using Windows 10 Pro 1909 - LR 9.2.1

I have a folder to which I regularly add photos related to the same topic. This is the only Lightroom folder where I store that much pictures. I always imported the photos by synchronizing the folder. Never had a problem until I reached about 2000 images stored in that folder. Never had a problem when synchronizing other folders in that catalog. Ditto with other catalogs.

Then Lightroom started to freeze when clicking on Import in the Synchronize folder dialog. That is, the Import dialog opens and then LR immediately freezes. No way to fix this beside killing the Lightroom process. However, if I uncheck the "Show import dialog before importing" option and try again, the images are imported without any problem. No way to synchronize when checking that option.

I tried to optimize the catalog but this didn't help.

Then I split that folder in 2 parts (about 1000 images in each). No more problem when synchronizing and opening the import dialog. This also indicates that it's not a particular image that is causing the problem (I have tested synchronization in both folders after the split).

So, there's obviously an issue with the import dialog when there are too much images in the target folder. I was not aware of a limitation regarding the number of images in a folder but it seems there's one.

Any similar experience ?

Thanks in advance.

Patrick,

I tried to reproduce and could not.

  1. Create folder with 2100 images (raw, JPEG, Tiff & PSD).
  2. Add 35 images via file browser
  3. Synchronize with Import dialog activated
No issue
  1. To same folder add 34 images via file browser
  2. Syncrhonize with Import dialog deactivated
No Issue

Tested 9.2.1 - Win 10 1903

Any other details you can share would be helpful.

I couldn't reproduce on macOS 10.15.4 and Lr9.2.1 on a folder of 2465 images.

Thanks for the replies.

OK. I moved all 2028 images back to the same original folder and tried again to synchronize after adding new images. Problem gone.

I guess I'll never know what happened.

I hope that one day we'll have a debug log facility. That could help a lot. Both the users and the development team. I'm wondering why this has never been implemented. LUA ?

I tried to synchronize a few files in the same folder today : problem back.

All that I can say is that Lightroom is busily accessing T:\Users\<user>\Temp\lrperformance\lrperformance.db-wal and lrperformance.db-shm. That's the only noticeable thing it is doing plus exchanging with Photo.home:53285 -> ec2-52-35-3-227.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com:https.

This consumes significant CPU resources.

It seems that lrperformance.db has a problem. When loading that database in SQLite Expert, I get an error report. It is available here :  https://www.dropbox.com/s/sjvnac2tp7tjcej/lrperformance.db?dl=0 . However, since this is a temporary file, I guess it is not systematically corrupted every day since I'm automatically deleting any leftover temporary file in the TEMP folder when the system starts each morning.

I have returned to the "folder splitting" strategy.

Here is a link to a video showing the problem. As reported above, this doesn't happen when bypassing the import dialog.

Rikk,

Please remove the "not a problem" flag. It's still one.

There are multiple workarounds that I'm aware of. Thanks.

But I'd just like the program to work as advertised when synchronizing, which it did until recently.

It seems that the problem doesn't show up when I discard the previews before synchronizing. This is consistent with the non-occurrence of the bug when bypassing the import dialog during synchronization : the previews are not needed in that case.

If anyone can confirm...
