Lightroom Classic: Ability to sync Smart Collections with (Lightroom CC / Mobile / lightroom.adobe.com)

Collection synching / Lightroom Mobile is a great addition to Lightroom 5.4. Please extend this functionality to Smart Collections as well.

I can see if synching all files (I have about 70K RAW files) the smart previews could quickly use up the space on the iPad... and unlike android devices you can't add storage.

Maybe we could atleast synch large thumbnails or lighter previews to the iPad... that way you can flag or rate if not fully edit.

I agree with all of the commenters. Difficult to come up with a useful workflow without smart collection support. Alternatively, a publish service (which can be based on a smart collection, but only updates when published from the desktop) could be useful.

Disappointed that this feature wasn't added to 5.7. Perhaps we'll have to wait for another 9 months to see....

Well, I waited 5 months, and now still not there in Lightroom 6, despite the chorus of people requesting this (seemingly straightforward) feature. I'm crossing my fingers for Lightroom 7.3...

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Is it possible to synchronize with Lightroom mobile dynamic collections please ? ....

It would be a great help to sync smart collections to LR mobile. If there's a batch of images I want to edit later, I can just punch in the criteria, let it sync over the cloud, and edit the images while waiting in the doctors office.

I'd like to chime in with most of the other posters just how necessary it is to me to have smart collections from my MBP sync up to the cloud and thus to my iPad. I really love to view the images on the iPad, but prefer to store and import them into the laptop. Though ideally if I could import photos directly from my camera into either LR on the laptop or the iPad and have them become accessible on all those devices immediately I'd be so thrilled. C'mon Adobe, Light Room is a great product, I love it, but keep improving it!

Count my vote for syncing smart collections!

Count me in here as well - I'd love to only sync starred photos to my ipad to cut down on the volume of photos kept on there.

I just added a feature to my Collection Agent plugin which maintains regular collections alongside smart collections which have the same contents but aren't smart. You should be able to Lr-mobile-sync those instead..

Let me know if it helps, or doesn't.. - free:

This works great! Thanks for making it. At least now I don't have to abandon my smart collection based workflow with Mobile Lightroom!

Thanks Scott! - that's good to hear..

I recently automated it (dumb collections auto-updated when smart collections change), so consider downloading the latest version. If you have any other ideas for improvement, do tell.. (preferably by contacting me outside the forum: http://www.robcole.com/Rob/ContactMe).

Thanks again,
Rob

Hi Rob - sadly it looks like your site is down? Somehow the plugin got wiped out when I upgraded to LR 6, which aggravatingly, still does not have syncing of smart collections (maybe we have to wait until LR 14), but will "keep you in business"...

I use publish to a set of folders on Hard Drive and then sync those with my iphone. Not as dynamic but works just as well for smart folders as for dumb folders

Link's dead.

This is a good reason why adobe should implement this rather than leave it up to the community to find work arounds.

Love you Adobe!

I've just been trying, and I'm afraid I don't understand how it should work. I suspect it's me, but I can only get it to create another set of smart collections.
Thanks

In the future, please contact me "directly" (outside the forum) if you have problems with any of my plugins:

http://www.robcole.com/Rob/ContactMe

Anyway, you must not have used the correct function, which should have been:

'Make Dumb Copy of Smart Collections'

I don't see how that function could possibly have created any more smart collections - just regular collections with same contents as their smart counterpart.

I've got it working now, and it's excellent. Fills a very obvious gap in Lightroom Mobile.

The lack of syncing smart collections is a major gap. As an amateur photographer, smart collections are my primary tool for grouping and viewing photos. Some of these are keyword based, however others are timeframe based and therefore quite dynamic. Lightroom mobile for me is used for two purposes, basic editing / cleaning of photos and viewing / sharing.
Basic correction .... flag photos for keep/deletion, rate and basic correction particularly when travelling. This really only works without smart collection as I have 1 collection which captures device camera roll. SLR jpegs are imported to the device and appear in this collection.Lightroom mobile does an excellent job.
However for viewing ... This a a real chore. After completing final editing / naming, it is then nessary to determine what has changed in smart collections and copying photos to the LR mobile collections.
Whilst I enjoy the functionality, given viewing photos is so important and smart collections are pivotal in providing a 'live' view of collections, I'm really not sure if there is sufficient value to continue my Adobe subscription.

I've had a lot of good feedback for the new feature in CollectionAgent (Maintain Dumb Copies of Smart Collections) which helps with this Lr shortcoming. The latest version supports automatic updating, so dumb collection tracks smart collection without any action on users part.

There are lots of discussions on the difficulties of recovering mistakes removing photos from Smart Collections. Given LR mobile (currently) only allows changing the flag and rating, why not set up a Smart Collection based on the flag setting and ratings which would exclude photos from your collections ? That way, photos deleted by flagging changed would appear in this other collection and could be fixed.

When LR capabilities are extended to include say managing keywords, it becomes more difficult. However, this might simply require having a 'dumb' smart collection which picks up all photo all all recent photos.

Adobe – we're paying for this software! Can you please finally listen to customer feedback?

I hear the concerns about recovering from changes made in the mobile versions, if they result in the original no longer being accessible from the mobile device. My primary use case of the mobile clients is to show photos to people, as opposed to edit them. So I would like to have the option from within the mobile app to lock what's being reviewed, so there's no concerns about fat fingering a change. I currently publish folders to my hard drive and sync those to iphone/ipad, which allows me to sync smart folders, but results in the dead copy I like. But having that sync work in the background would be nice, especially given that iOS syncing isn't really that bullet proof.
