Lightroom Classic 9.3 will not consistently let me add multiple items to a collection

I added some files that already reside on my computer to the Lightroom catalog, a mix of DNG, JPG and MOV files, all of which Lightroom was able to add without issue. However, if I try to grab multiple items and add them to a collection, Lightroom deselects all of them but one I am grabbing, and will not let me add them, or even that one, to any collection. I first was able to add some jpg files fine, but then when I tried to add some more, along with some MOV files, it started this weird behavior. And, it will not consistently let me drag even one MOV or JPG or NEF file to a collection.

Every once in a while, if I select some DNG files, or some JPG files, it does let me drag all of them, but most of time it just deselects all the rest, and refuses to let me add even that one image. I also tested this using other older files that were previously downloaded normally, and but Lightroom is deselecting the other two as well most, but not all, of the time.

I have never seen this behavior before, so I am perplexed. Strangely, I spent hours earlier today going through older images, and LRC let me drag one or more items to a different collection just fine. It’s very frustrating not to be able to add all these new files to a collection I have, as my workflow has ground to a halt.

You have to Drag at the Image itself and not the grey boarder.

Wow, I guess I was not being precise enough with them- I have never had that happen before. Did previous versions let you just grab the grey area as well? That was simple! Thanks.

Lightroom has always worked this way.  There are a small number of things that are different when clicking on the image vs the gray border - including the right click context menu.

Another way of adding photos to a collection is to right click the collection and click Add Selected Photos to this Collection from the menu. I find this method easier and more reliable than dragging and dropping.

Interesting- I sometimes drag a bunch from bottom film strip into collections too. But I never realized I could do it "backwards" as well. Thanks for the tip.

I like using B to add to a target collection, but the problem is that B also removes images from the collection, if they is already in there- not a great behavior. Option + B would be better...

I have found the easiest way to add images to a collection, if working with only one collection at a time, is to set it as the Target collection, then use the short cut "B" to add the images to that collection.
