Lightroom Classic 8.4: Hanging on launch (Mac 10.14.6)

I just upgraded Lightroom Classic from v 8.1.3 to 8.4.  It now hangs. I am on MacOS Mojave version 10.14.6. When reverting to v 8.1.3, Lightroom works fine. Are there compatibility issues with this version of Mojave? Thanks

I am having problems with Windows 10. I have downgraded without success and am now back to 8.4. If I did not have two monitors the second on which I open the LR catalogue so I can delete the Lock file things would be very difficult.

Can you run us through the exact sequence that gets it working for you Bill? The lock file is supposed to be created when LR is open, and then is supposed to disappear when it quits. But you're having to delete it while LR's partially open to get it to open completely?

Oh, and when you say you downgraded without success, you mean you had trouble downgrading? Or that it didn't help with this issue?

When I open LR it just hangs and does not load the catalogue. If I tried to close it is just greys out and says it is not responding. If I open the catalogue on my second monitor and delete the lock file the files opens almost immediately, and then all is well. I was able to download the previous version without any problem but it did not solve the lock file problem.

Have you tried not just launching Lightroom, but double-clicking on the ACTUAL catalog in your user location (I know you're Win10, so wherever your catalog is stored)? Other thought: is the lock file there before you try to open LR? If so, can you delete before?

Greetings all,

Our engineering team continues to investigate this issue. We are in need of a test catalog or two that is not launching under 10.14.6. Can any of you provide a catalog file that is not opening?

If you can, Zip the catalog and send it to me and make sure you reference this thread. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of the problem and issue a fix quickly.  Thank you.

Hi Rikk,

I wanted to let you know that I sent the information below to Adobe Support in reference to the issue you are also investigating from “Photoshop Family”. (Lightroom 8.4 hanging at launch with OS 10.14.6).
Thanks

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Lightroom Classic 8.4: Not compatible with iMac (less than 1 year old).

After latest upgrade I couldn't open Lightroom Classic. After a conversation/chat with helpdesk I was advised to install a previous version 8.3 and I was informed that most likely the internal graphic card in my iMac that is less than 1 year old is not compatible with the lates Lightroom Classic...

How can adobe be realising latest version that are not working with equipment that is up to date and is used by millions of users ?

Best regards,

Witold

I have 2 libraries on my computer. One for Clients, one for family.
One opens fine... the other will hang at the start screen. A window pops up on startup to ask which catalog I want to open. One opens fine... the other will hang at the splash screen immediately.  If I check; "Test integrity of this catalog", (After choosing the one that doesn't open), it will hang immediately with the 'Select Catalog'  window open.

I am now able to run LR Classic 8.4 on my high sierra (os 10.13.6) system.  Here's what I did:

0. Revert back to 8.3.1

1. Disabled GPU assistance in LR 8.3.1

2. Created a new, empty catalog

3. Imported my old LR Catalog (suggested by dj_paige, using File->Import from Another Catalog

4. Shutdown LR and signed out of Creative Cloud

5. Signed in to Creative Cloud and started LR 8.3.1

6. Full system reboot

7. Updated LR to 8.4

8. Launched LR which AGAIN had the spinning beach ball

9. Went to bed and let it keep going overnight

Some time during the middle of the night the ball stopped spinning and I now have a working catalog.

I suspect that the combo of 2, 3, and 9 (being patient) were the key elements of the fix.  Coping this to some open threads in the hope that it might help someone else.

@Rikk Flohr, do I need to report a separate bug for 10.13.6

After updating, LR Classic 8.4 also hangs on opening on Win 10x64 v.1903 Dell desktop with NVidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card running V.431.70 studio driver. Normal LR operation usually restores after several (long) minutes

Over at the Forum web site, one WIN 10 user with a frozen LR start, removed the Logitech Options plug-in, and that worked. You would probably have to do this outside of LR (modules folder?). If you have that plug-in, perhaps give that a try?

My 15” MACBook Pro Retina 2015 2.8Ghz, MAC OS 10.14.6, LR Classic 8.4 does not have the issue. And, I temporarily had that plug-in enabled after a Logitech Options software update.

If it is any help, I had this issue on Windows with LR hanging at startup and the problem ended up being the result of a Logitech plugin.  Not sure how this translates to the Mac but might provide some insight:

OK - I have had this same problem since the Windows update and tried everything without success.  Finally, finally, fixed it.

There is a folder inside

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\CEP\extensionsLogiOptionsAdobe

I dragged that folder out of the directory structure.

I also saw that there is a Plugin in the Lightroom Plugin Manager for LogiOptions, and I disabled it.

Everything is back to normal now!!!

Hope this helps someone before they remove all their preferences and settings and plugins.

Disabling the Logitech Options plugin (using the Plugin Manager in LR) appears to have cured the problem.  Many thanks to David Golding and MACKIE for the tip!
MACKIE, I am curious why you also removed the LogiOptionsAdobe folder from the Adobe CEP extensiions Common Files subdirectory.

I wasn't sure if that "check" that happens during the Reading Preferences step was looking to the folder. Also because I was desperately flailing about trying to fix my problem and I read that someone else had done that for a different problem.

Thanks for the reply.
Desperately flailing trying to fix computer problems seems to be becoming the new default mode with every OS, app and firmware update these days. Brings back painful memories of the bad old days, when every other day was a BSD adventure..
Thinking about the Logitech Options issue further, I wonder if removing the LogiOptionsAdobe folder was the only route open for those folks dealing with a LR installation that permanently froze whenever they tried to open LR.

I am also wondering if the next LogiOptions update will repopulate the CEP extensions directory.

Because I have a basic desktop setup and don't use customized keyboard/mouse settings in LR or PS, I am also wondering whether I would be better off just removing the entire LogiOptions app from my system.

All this is very interesting but why are we all jumping through so many hoops to try and solve a problem which is the responsibility of Adobe. I suspect we are only the tip of an iceberg!
Rikk cannot something not be done about this?

The problem is figuring out why you're seeing it and others aren't. That takes a bit of detective work.

You don't happen to have that same Logitech plug-in installed, do you? It's been known to cause problems in the past.

I totally agree. I don't have time for testing... I am working on the latest iMac and latest OS - like millions of other users - so I would expect LRC to be compatible.
I waisted a few hours on Sunday trying to resolve something that should have been working in first instance.

I am having the same exact problem with 10.14.6 and 8.4. I tried to remove the preferences file and that made no difference. So I launched from a simple catalog that I had used in a test a few months ago and then created a new catalog and tried to import my current catalog into the new catalog. It said creating new temporary catalog only to hang. I waited about an hour and then hit the cancel button and Lightroom then said cancelling for about another hour. I eventually did a Force Quit even though the system did not say Lightroom was unresponsive. Reading above I don't have the Logitech plug-in so that is not the issue. Very frustrating.

You might want to roll back a version until Adobe figures out what’s up. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/roll-b...

Jeffrey,
People here have been experiencing a coflict between LR 8.4 and macOS 10.14.6.   Most seem to be suggesting the problem lies with LR 8.4, but others of us (me included) have LR8.4 installed and running perfectly with macOS 10.14.5
My feeling is that it is just as likely that something subtle has changed in the OS update that causes the problem.
Your post implies you are confident that macOS 10.14.6 is OK now.  Yes?

Jeffrey,

I installed the OS update, restarted the computer and installed LR 8.4.  I still have the same problem with LR 8.4 hanging at launch.  Here is a screen shot of the activity monitor.  I reverted to LR 8.3.1 one more time for LR to work.  Don't you guys test??  This is really frustrating.

Hi Jeffrey,
I worked extensively with Apple Support since I am still encountering LR hanging after installing the supplemental update to Mac OS.  The Senior Adviser who was helping me narrowed the issue to the current catalog containing my pictures not opening.  A test (blank) catalog can open fine on LR 8.4.  He is requesting a phone contact so that Apple Support can work directly with the Adobe engineers.  Please send a phone contact so that work can proceed efficiently with Apple.  Thanks

This is getting utterly ridiculous.  I am caught between Apple and Adobe trying all kinds of workarounds.  I have reinstalled OS, installed the latest OS supplemental update, worked with Adobe Support and Apple support for 4 hours, created a test catalog, tried to import to that catalog, (it doesn't work).  Reverted many times to 8.3.1 to be able to use LR.
I am unwilling to go any further.  The problem is obviously with the latest LR 8.4 update unable to open a non empty catalog.  Fix it!!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled LR Classic Hangs on startup.

I am running mac OS High Sierra. Been great with LR classic 8.4. Then it then will not open my catalogue. Spinning beachball. It will open an empty new catalogue (empty) but unable to import into this empty catalogue.

Eventually, by going back to 8.3 it works with no issues.

What do to?? Future upgrades
