Lightroom Classic 8.0: ? Next to Folder (CR3 issue red herring) Can't open photographs to edit

I have been unable to access a group of photographs I took with a canon M50 which uses CR3 files. I am now using version 8 of LR Classic CC (so I think the CR3 issue has been a red herring.) I can see the photographs listed in my catalogue but see this.  I have also included a copy of the finder folder where the files are stored on an external drive.  Not sure how to get LR to recognize these photographs.  Of note, the other files in the 2018 folder which as CR2 files are readable.  Another possible red herring, the files have this icon.

You are using a disk that is also used by Apple Time Machine. That often creates problems, because Time Machine alters the permissions of such a disk. You can’t set ‘Ignore Ownership of this Volume’, which would be the normal setting for an external disk used by Lightroom. Store your photos on a dedicated external disk.

Thanks, Johan.  I will try to implement your suggestion.  I would need to  migrate all the old photographs over to a new drive as well as new ones?  How do you tell LR where to find the photographs?  Do I need to reimport them or set up a new catalogue?
