Lightroom Classic 7.5: Import problem, does not detect duplicates

With Lightroom Classic CC (7.5) on OSX, importing from SD Card does not detect duplicates in the catalog.
I also selected "check for possible duplicates" and "new photos", nothing works.
What is wrong here? the photos in question were previously imported from another catalog, and I saw several posts that this prevents Lightroom from detecting a duplicate import.
Why is this error persistent since one year, why are we paying for this software?
Is there a workaround?

That's the problem. The catalog import/export routine didn't used to transfer the import file hash used to identify duplicates (and never had done since 1.x). It does now (since 7.5), but that won't help for existing photos.

The workaround is to import them and then use a plug-in like Teekesselchen to identify the duplicates and remove them.
