Lightroom Classic 7.3: Zoom not loading

Zoom not loading in Lightroom Classic cc 7.3. To get it to work I have to click on 1:1 then to another ratio like 1:2 then it will load. If I just hit the space bar or Z key it will zoom in, but it will not load.

Have you checked "Use Smart Previews instead of Originals for image editing" in Lightroom's user preference dialog?

I have just tried it with "use smart Previews" and it still does not work.

I'm using an older mac book pro mid 2010 with 8gb of ram. I don't think LR can use the graphics card, My mac is up to date. it does not matter if I zoom into 1:1 or 1:2 first
