Solved

Lightroom Classic 7.2: No raw previews. Previews are empty/grey.

Today, I'm no longer seeing previews in the import module when importing Raw files from the SD card from my Canon 200d on the built in card reader of my MacBook Pro. Same thing from Canon 7dii Compact Flash card with USB 3.0 card reader plugged in. 
The images import OK.
I'm running LR Classic CC 7.2, Camera Raw 10.2, mac OS High Sierra 10.13.3. 
I have tried reformatting the SD card, but still getting the "Preview Unavailable"

Greetings, 

If you could see these previously, I would recommend resetting your preferences file.  Sometimes weird behavior is corrected/cured by resetting the preferences. 

Reset Procedure:
1. Close Lightroom.
2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom. 
3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
4. Close Lightroom.
5. Restart Lightroom.

Does the behavior continue after resetting the preferences?

I am having the same issue. I have tried the reset as listed above but that does not solve the issue.
LR Classic CC 7.2, Camera Raw 10.2  Windows 10, version 1709, Nikon NEF files. I have also tried in LR 6 and CC. I get the same message in Photoshop too.

My laptop has the same versions & has no problem. My PC is the one I do my editing on & has my storage & catalogue so I need it to work on the PC.

If resetting the preferences doesn't fix the issue my next stop would be my video card manufacturer's website and make absolutely sure I have the most up-to-date- driver installed. Don't rely on Windows Update to  do this for you as that version is often out of date.

The PC had a fresh install a couple of weeks ago & all drivers were installed at that time. from the nVidia site.
It had the same error about a week ago with some photos but I was able to see other images. It is only the latest images giving me the issue.

I have worked out what is causing this issue in my case.

I have been using Nikon Transfer to import from memory card to my initial storage drive.
When I used Nikon Transfer 2 there was no issue, I had a problem with version 2 of the software so loaded version 1.
It appeared to work ok & rename my images but it stops the images opening in LR & Photoshop.

Now I just have to sort out the registry problem with Nikon Transfer 2 so I can get back to my original workflow.

Nikon Transfer  previous versions did have some issues. Is there any reason you are using it at all instead of Lightroom for your ingest?

I have a separate HDD that I prefer to download to first.
That way I can remove any unwanted images prior to renaming them. It also gives me an extra copy of all images.

After download/rename with Transfer2 I then import to LR on a different HDD giving me my first backup.
I then have the LR catalog stored & backed up onto two other HDD's.
I also have a mirrored NAS with another complete copy of images & catalog.

As you can see, I like to have plenty of backup options in case of failure. I work in IT & see the result of insufficient backups often.

I have good/great news. :)

I have repaired the registry error that was preventing me from importing via Nik Transfer2.
I can now use my regular workflow. It may seem like extra steps to some, but it is a system that works for me. (most of the time lol)
