I disagree, I find it much easier looking down on from above and selecting the location.

Well of course you start from above but in some cases if you want to be precise 3D and street view help a lot. I would even say that you cannot do without them.

For example if you try to place a photo from
-a place you never went.
-a place where you took the photo 10 years ago or more
-a place where every thing look the same from above (forest, desert, sea, moutains,...)

In this case I can tell you that only 3D or street view can help find the point of view precisely.
Looking from above will only allow you to find the place approximatively with errors up to several km depending on how big the place was and similar things look from above
with 3D , from the ground level, you get to see the relief shape that is on the photo
and that is unique to the point of view. If you took more than one photo at the same place then you can even "triangulate your position)

And on top of that watching the photo in the 3D world of google earth is a lot more fun. But that last point depend on people.

-a place you never went.
--Tagging a Photo for somewhere that were never at. Sounds logical. Good Point!

-a place where you took the photo 10 years or more ago.
--You have me on that one. Street view wouldn't have changed what the places look like.

-a place where every thing look the same from above (forest, desert, sea, mountains,...)
-- I don't know which country you come from, but we don't have street view in the forest, desert, or sea where I come from..

Yes, this would certainly be helpful at times. I spent a good bit of time with LR open in one window and my browser open in another one just so I could use street view. That's what happens when you take pictures from the street!

If you could be respectfull Andrew I would appreciate.
Apparently you never used these tools (3D and streetview) to geotag you photo so i do understand your critism or question, it is all natural but not your sarcasm.

- I have stock of 1000 of old photograhs taken long before my birth, so I never was there.

-It seems you did not read everything but in case of forest, desert... I use 3D. I use the shape of the relief. Takes time but it works quite well
