Lightroom 6: Just installed, when editing photos the main photo just shows the before image

When attempting to edit photos in Lightroom 6 the image in the main window does not update, only the small image in the navigator window changes. Also when I try it with the side by side views for before and after the views in the main window all look the same, and again only the navigator images changes.
