Changing the "masking" slider in the Detail section should enable the mask-view by default
My normal workflow includes to sharpen the photo at the end with the sliders offered in the detail section.
Question:
did you ever change the value of the masking slider WITHOUT pressing the ALT or Option key?
How would you be able to see the changes in the mask ?!?
So, why isn't the mask displayed by default as long the slider is clicked ?
This would definitely speed-up my workflow.

In answer to your second question: I can see visually on the finished image when to stop - most of the time.
Third question: Because hinting is just that 'hinting' when you need it. If this slider were changed it would work counter all the other hinting tools available (Clipping on Exposure/Highlights/Shadows/Blacks/Whites/Sharpening (all sliders) most of those you would never want on by default and it seems like bad design to have one slider work the other way.
