Can't resize files from Lightroom going via Apple Mail

I have found that the best way to downsize large files for export is to set the size of the short edge; Image Sizing > Short Edge > 400 (pixels). You can even go as large as 600 pixels and still get a file that is only a few hundred kb. Export from Lightroom to a folder, then attach through apple mail. Apple mail will still ask if you want the file to be original size, large, medium or small. 

I have a preset for resizing to Long Edge 1000 pixels with resolution 80 ppi. But now when I export to email it goes out at 5kb. Before the Classic upgrade it used to be a much bigger and more useful file. These are too pixilated to view properly. I'm wondering if this is a glitch in the upgrade.

Are you exporting directly to email, which I forgot how to do or are you exporting to a folder and then attaching from apple mail?

I'm using File/Email Photo in LR where I use the preset described above. It has always worked until this upgrade. If I drag a file from the desktop onto a new Mail message I have the full range of size options available to me (Small - Actual Size). These were always available after using File/Email Photo before the Classic LR upgrade. But now every file on every preset (including Full Size) comes out of LR at 5kb. (File/Export is working fine, it is just File/Email Photo that is problematic.)

In my recent workflows I've been exporting to a folder, then attaching those files into emails. This helps me when I have to go back several months later when a client asks me to resend something or to send the same files to someone else. No, it isn't as quick as exporting directly to mail from LR, but it works well w/o minimizing the files to 5k. Will give File > Email a shot. Also, beware that there might be some issues with apple mail in 10.13.1 which I had today when trying to attach some pdf document files.

Thanks for your help Richard. I'd be interested to see how you go with File/Email Photo. I use it every day and the workaround would be more time consuming, but I will have to use it in the meantime. I will still pursue getting File/Email Photo to work. 

Agree, Margaret, it is much more time consuming, but my exports tend to be somewhat complicated in terms of what I'm sending out, file size, versions, crops, so putting them into folders has helped me stay organized. For client work I have been attaching directly from gmail, which takes the files exactly as I've left them in their folders.

I've just found another report of the same issue Margaret, so I'm thinking definitely a bug. Can you remind me of your OS version please?

I'm running the same system and get the same results however, even though it says the message size is 5k the image itself is much larger.

You can test this yourself by creating the draft of an email as you described then right click on the image and save it to your desktop.
Go to that saved image then right click it and choose "Get Info" and you should see that the actual image size is much larger.

If you send the email to yourself you will see that it comes through at the proper size as well.

I will run this by our team and get some eyes on the issue as you are correct in assuming it should state the proper file size in the original draft of the email.

Once more, I can't help but remind people how inexpensive memory cards (e.g. SD, compact flash) are compared to film, negative development and proofing. If you pull your cards once full and go to new ones, you will always have your originals should they be consumed by hungry software. Think about it, you will never have another conversation about "recovering lost files." Never. For emphasis, SD cards have overwrite locks on them. If you delete original files from your cards to "save money" and you lose the money shot, how much have you saved?
