Bypassing Adobe CC Desktop
Hi,
I have a photography subscription. I don't need Adobe CC Desktop. I want to get rid of it because of the never ending problems with this da..ed tool that make my user's life more complicated than it should be. Each time an update of CC Desktop is made available I know that I will again spend time fixing the problems that will systematically appear. So, I need a way to update PS and LR directly.
The available direct download links do not give access to the current versions. Updating can only be done through Adobe CC Desktop. This is not acceptable because this tool is much too buggy and absolutely not reliable.
So, Adobe please give us the possibility to update LR and PS directly like any other software. This would make our life much simpler.
If you're like me, please add your vote.
Thanks.

Does your client work with a user account, if so, it's The problem is that since this application must write to the disk with system rights, it must run with these rights.
Call Adobe for a correct setup.

There are a lot of people who don't have any difficulty with CC Desktop. This doesn't mean that there's no problem. I'm not alone with this constant issues with CC Desktop. I'm using an admin account. I'm aware of the requirements for Adobe CC and I have made sure that CC Desktop runs as an administrator.
I'm a former system engineer/developer, so I'm very comfortable with these topics. Just, depending on the system configuration and history, CC Desktop may or may not fail.
This tool is much too complicated and most of us don't need it. The problem is that Adobe want you to use it anyway while it would be much simpler to allow updating PS and LR in a more classical way.

I'm not saying I'd want to do without it permanently—the connection to the cloud is a good thing more often than not—but for those times that an ACC update causes issues, then it would be helpful to have a workaround for updating/installing/uninstalling the software.
Even if it IS something in our particular configuration that the ACC app suddenly takes issue with, there is NO troubleshooting help, NO indication what one program is interfering that wasn't interfering yesterday, literally, in fact, minutes before the update when all was still fine.
So it's of much less value to say "fix your computer" than it is to offer a workaround. The computer can be set to phone home— using a workaround, you can have to agree to connect to the internet and let any installed or updated program check your license. But to be utterly dependent upon the CC App working perfectly and no other option, is just not good for the customer.

If that doesn’t fix it run Disk Warrior if you can ($120), (https://www.alsoft.com), reboot. If you can’t do Disk Warrior, at least run First Aid from Disk Utility. Also just doing a "Safe Boot" can clear out caches (restart, hold down shift until you see "Safe Boot" on the screen, then reboot normally.
If that doesn’t work try launching Lightroom from your other (admin or test) account, with a new catalog, as a test. Does it run OK? If it does it may be a corrupted preference in your Username/Library folder. Check The Lightroom Queen site for instructions on how to reset your preferences (https://www.lightroomqueen.com).
Finally you could try deleting everything Adobe (use the Lightroom uninstaller in your Utilities folder, then use App Cleaner to completely delete everything left named “Adobe something”) and reinstall Lightroom from scratch (Last Resort!)

If I need the app to install and it won't run because of something no one can determine, that one doesn't fly anymore. That used to be fine to do. Today, not so much. BTW, I'm able to run the CC app again myself, but they didn't fix the issue. I have a workaround for it. If I were having serious issues with the other programs, I'd agree that I needed to do a lot of this because it was much more likely MY computer(s) fault, as differently configured as they are, than the CC app.
Further, a lot of users won't be comfortable running Onyx and deleting things they may not want selected—they may not know what they're looking at. This kind of thing isn't for everyone. Using the CC app is, so the burden should be on Adobe to make sure it works or there's a workaround/temporary solution. They should give us a direct way to report problems. The other Adobe forums have nice users like us, but no CC app staff seems to come near the place.
Oh, and I only use LR for tethered shooting and it's not the least corrupt nor is the catalog, even after all these years.

I agree it would be nice to have an alternate and "normal" update process to update directly from within Ps menu and download an update file; especially if any recover/re-install is needed later.
