Adjustment brush adding color instead of removing

Brand new rookie here to Lightroom! I used the adjustment brush for selective color editing in the first group of photos that I edited, worked fine once I learned how to do it via tutorials. I recently imported two more files and tried the same process without success. When i convert the photo to monochrome and increase the saturation on the one color that I want to keep I needed to edit other areas that pulled the color where I don't want. When I follow the same steps from the previous successful edit, the adjustment brush is painting on red instead of erasing the color. I tried a different file of photos and it did the same thing.

It sounds as if you may have activated the Brush Overlay tool which shows a rubylith overlay where you've brushed. WIth the brush pin selected, hit the "O" key (for overlay) to turn this off.
