Photoshop Save As on Mac

How come when saving a file from photoshop (any version) on Mac OS X(macOS) (any version)
and you click another file that is showing in the save as dialog, not only does photoshop change the name, which is what a lot of users do to name files, photoshop also wrongly changes the extension as well?

Example original file in photoshop is a .psd in this case Scan 1.psd

Now click on another file say for example pine tree.jpg and not only does the name of the file your saving change but also the extension, which should not happen.

Other mac applications and adobe software like Illustrator only correctly change the name.

In days gone by this was not really an issue since mac and photoshop knew the type of file by resource forks and such, but now that mac and photoshop did away with resource forks and such and rely on the extension, it's very easy to corrupt files doing what i have described here.

This example with photoshop 20.04 running on macOS Mojave 10.14.4.

It's tradition! LOL  I think we've asked that forever. And no resource forks in ages. I haven't seen the file corrupted. It saves as what you have selected in the format list with the wrong extension. You just have to give it the right format, but that takes knowing, or remembering, what it should be—at least in my experience with it.

What you see here is the standard MacOS ‘Save as’ dialog. Photoshop simply calls this dialog and uses it. So this may well be an Apple problem rather than a Photoshop problem.

No other apple applications including adobe software like illustrator have the issue, so clearly in my opinion it's a photoshop issue. Not a huge deal by any means, but users can corrupt saved images using the Save As dialog, which should not be possible.

You say other applications have the issue, but I assume you mean they DON’T have this issue? If they do, then this is indeed an Apple issue.

Every Mac application works this way. Windows has a similar UI feature.
