Photoshop Elements: Restore ability to fill shape layers with transparent patterns and gradients

Restore the ability to easily fill shape layers with patterns or gradients, both
with or without transparency, as was possible in photoshop elements 1-7.

What method of filling were you using in previous versions of Elements that is no longer available in Elements 8 and 9?

In photoshop elements 1-7 one could make a shape layer and if one wanted to fill
the shape with a gradient or pattern, one would use Layer>Change Layer Content
and pick pattern or gradient or any other adjustment layer, but mainly the pattern and gradients.

I guess this (change layer content) was probably removed because that command was removed in photoshop proper, but where as photoshop proper has other options for this including layer styles (pattern or gradient overlay) vector mask from path etc, elements has none of these other options.

There are workarounds of course, but most result in having the shape layer no longer editable (simplified), which kinda of defeats the purpose of have shape layers to begin with.

The workaround for filling shape layers with patterns is easy. One just makes a shape layer (this is a color fill layer), then go to either Edit>Fill and choose pattern or use the paint bucket tool set to pattern and color fill changes to pattern fill.

For gradients, the workaround is not so easy, One needs to select the shape (path) with the shape selection tool and drag the path to a new document, then drag back to the document with the shape layer and then make a gradient or pattern fill layer.

change layer content in pse1-7:
