Lightroom: rename backup folders please

But I'm not sure which form you were starting with (sounds like it might have been a different one).

lol - yes! I've found that i have lots of brilliant ideas for workarounds, such that i have a dozen little piles of experimental backups spread over three drives, none remotely connected and each quickly forgotten. It's maddening! In that hilarious kind of way ;-)

the next thing I'm going to try is (though this may get lost too), creating a whole separate catalog for backups, with instructions to order them by date, but to not change the filenames except to add sequence (to prevent any two from having the same name). I wonder if information could be added to the metadata about the date the photos were imported? THAT would be handy too, for tracking them.

That's one thing I'm starting right now - while still playing around with how I'm going to do things. When importing, I'll have it set to make a second copy for the untouched originals.. Have it rename when COPYing using a preset like "[first,middle,last initials]_dateYYYYMMDD_[original filename]_ISO_[focal length(focal length 35mm)]_camera" - all to folders sorted with the destination preset 'organize by date', date format '2012/12' ....

I'll see how that turns out -- it's based of Peter Krogh's "The DAM Book". But I'm just not sure of the full implementation yet. I'm still trying to learn some basic LR stuff while thinking about it. I'm not a pro, so I don't need a full-fledged workflow while learning how to accomplish all this. :-D
I think I may keep a separate catalog for my old jpgs while figuring out the catalog situation for my new camera raw+jpg situation

i may be misunderstanding, but i don't see any way to rename the back-up copies! Currently, depending on which method i remember, I copy files directly to disk into folders that prioritize by date YYYY MM DD followed by the word IMPORTED. The files in the folders are separated by camera, but not by date, because I import from several cards.

THEN I import off the cards and rename the files through the LR import process in a manner similar to yours, but without the camera info. Long filenames drive me nuts, because you have to enlarge the windows etc etc. I want to see the whole filename without futzing.

it's pretty cumbersome, actually, and takes a long time, during which i can forget what i'm doing entirely and wander off rather clueless about where i am in the procedure. Which is never a good thing.

i'm no pro, but i figure i've made every mess i can possibly make with lightroom. LOL. So i am probably an expert on what really really shouldn't be done ;-)

ALSO and on an aside in hopes it will be seen: I wrote this and was then prompted to sign in, which i did but the comment button simply goes gray saying 'commenting..." So I notice up top it still has me logged out, so i sign in again, and this time it correctly indicates my status but the comment button is still grayed out. So I copy and refresh, which of course wipes out the comment.

so this is fair warning to all ye who enter here! Either copy, lose it, or remember to login before starting!

When using the import screen to make a second copy, it will change the name of the second copy AND main copy to whatever is in the 'rename to' area. However it will make NO other changes to that second copy it dumps off - I tested that to make sure.

As far as the long filenames though - yeah, I'm still not sure if I should keep all that. I think I may still want ISO though, and maybe camera - and certainly the date and initials, of course. I use a program called Directory Opus, which is sort of a king of 'File Mangers' - and even with the current long names and 2 listers horizontally side-by-side, it shows them with room to spare on my widescreen laptop (in details&power-mode views). However, it's thumbnail view mode sometimes won't show it all, depending on how small/large I want the thumbnails (it'll split them among more lines) -- so I may end up changing that anyways due to that.
I think I'll also make use of the Windows Archive bit to help keep track of what's been backed up. However, seeing as how I've just started experimenting with open-session DVD's for non-full DVD backups, that will get messy at some point to. ... Not to mention when those get moved to BD..

ARGGHH! I SOO wish LR had better built-in facilities for backing up! I can't imaging that pro photographers don't back up their files!?!? Although they may likely already have a system in place - which might be why at LR *4*, there aren't better options for backup.

As to the loosing typing of comments part: I found 2 Firefox extensions that have made that a thing of the past. One is called Lazarus - and for backup I also use TextAreaCache. And yet for FURTHER backup, I use a general clipboard history/manger called Ditto - so I try to copy&paste longer comments when I remember to, just in case the other 2 fail for some reason. :)
