Lightroom CC 1.1 update is broken

I have just downloaded the Lightroom CC update on my iMac with Sierra OS. I use Lightroom Classic to sync previews to the cloud which I then can view on my iPad. This is still working OK. However, the desktop Lightroom CC cannot now find my cloud files. I store all Lightroom Classic files on an external drive, and the Lightroom CC sync files also on the same external drive. I store NO photos on my iMac internal drive. When I try and change the preference settings on the Lightroom CC update and restart the program, my changes are not kept. The preferences also say I am not logged in even though I definitely am. This update is obviously broken since default settings cannot be changed.
