Help - sometimes Smart Objects get created with enormous amounts of empty space!

Sometimes when I create a Smart Object from some existing layers, the resulting Smart Object gets made with a ridiculous amount of extra space. See below for an example (it got shrunk...original version here: )

On the left is the original document. In the middle is the Smart Object that was created. It's over 6000 x 29000 px, when the original was just 1000 x 2000 px!

As you can see from the bounding box that was created when I selected the entire contents and pressed Ctrl-T, the empty space is indeed empty - this isn't a case of a sneaky misplaced layer or layer mask. When I do Image\Trim\Transparent pixels, it successfully gets rid of all that empty space.

The layers in the document contain a lot of layer styles, including some largeish textures (eg. 2000x2000). But nothing that even approaches 6000x29000. And I wouldn't think that layer styles should affect the Smart Object bounds anyhow.

I don't know if this is a bug or I'm somehow doing something wrong. Any help either way would be appreciated.
