Why does Lightroom Classic still not support iPhone Files HEVC and HEIC

Hi,
I just bought an iPhone 11 Pro just to realize that the regular iphone files HEVC and HEIC are obviously not supported. at least the greyed out pictures won't open. when I tried to download and opend the files in the Windows (19) Photo viewer it told me that a codec was missing and I should downloadit for 99 cents (euro). after I did, at least windows could open the images, but LR is completely dead on those formats. In a way the new iPhone seems to be useless for LR users, all other solution a waste of time. Also PS refuses the task.

Any idea what could be done?? I consider giving the iPhone back. Unfortunately I haven't got a clue why Apple is using such an unusual format for their RAW (and is it really a sensible solution??

I just took a photo with my iPhone 11, used Image Capture to import it to my Mac, launched LR, then to Import and selected the HEIC picture to import, and LR added it to my catalog.  I'm running Catalina and LR 8.4.1.

I think this is a problem with Lightroom only on Windows, and while I don't want Adobe to dance to Apple's tune, it seems incredible that HEVC is still unsupported in Lightroom on Windows.

For now, go into the iPhone's settings and change the camera settings to compatible, which will record new videos in a format that isn't limited to Apple. There's really little point saving files in a file format that isn't generally supported.

Hi Christian, the HEIC/HEVC is not a RAW file, it is just a more effective picture compression format , more effective than JPG. Do not worry it will go away and JPG will survive. Follow Johns advice and you can keep your iPhone

Thank you all, will follow yr advise. Peter: I am surprised, I thought that 11 Pro was going to record in RAW as well but can't find it anywhere how to change preferences. Also, I am quite disappointed with 11 Pro image quality. if you go to 100 per cent, image quality may turn out really bad

You can capture DNG RAW files with the iPhone, though you must use a third party camera app that offers that capability. There are several that offer RAW as well as many other capabilities. You can check out Halide, Camera+, ProCam are just a few. There is quite a bit of info on the web to review to help your research as well.

If you use the Lightroom Mobile app on your phone that WILL record a RAW file. Yeah, any compressed format from ANY phone camera, jpeg or heic, won’t compete with RAW capture from my 60MP Sony, but I’m guessing you knew that! You want good images from 11 Pro? Use LR Mobile (or other RAW capture apps), and shoot outdoors or with a huge flash!
