why does camera raw convert files to 8bit when opening them

Why does camera raw convert files to 8bit when opening them? And it converts the colour profile to Adobe RGB. That is idiotic Adobe. Why would you dumb down my files without even asking me? Why make a program that works at a high level and then secretly dumb down the files?

Make the default the actual file profile and leave that alone when opening the file in ACR.

That's the default, in Camera Raw you should see a description of the file in the middle at the bottom of the image. Click it and set the bit depth and colour space there.

Lightroom\Preferences\External Editing, set the bit depth for the program you are exporting to.

You can set the default to 16 bit there too, as well as image size, color space, sharpening & open as smart object.
