Photoshop CC 2017: How do I JPEG's with Camera Raw? The RAW editor is much easier to edit in.

I've noticed that if I open a RAW file, Photoshop CC 2017 will open it in a very simple to use editor.  If I open a JPEG, it goes straight into Photoshop, which is much more frustrating to use for editing a photo quickly.  Is there some way to edit JPEGS the same was as RAW files?

https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/navigate-open-save-images-camera.html

On Windows go to Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw...
On Mac go to the Photoshop menu > Preferences > Camera Raw...

In the JPEG and TIFF handling section, set JPEG to : "Automatically open all supported JPEGs"

All JPEGs will open with Camera Raw rather than opening directly in Photoshop.

Instead of 'Open', use 'Open As' and choose the 'raw...' option?

I'll try that.  Thanks.

I don't have an "Open As" option that I can find.

I have a French version, the shortcut is Alt -Shift - Ctrl - O
Just right next to the file name, you get a dropdown menu where your can choose:
the 'Camera Raw, (*Tiff...' format option.

Not sure what that means.

There is a Camera Raw filter in Photoshop that can be used for JPEGs.

You can also configure Adobe Camera Raw to open jpegs.

Okay.  What is Adobe Camera Raw and how do I do that?  Sorry for all the dumb questions, I'm still fairly new to this software.  I want to keep it simple for now until I get comfortable with that and don't get discouraged, then start into the more advanced options.

You could:
1. Open your JPG normally
2. Choose menu Filter -> Camera Raw Filter (5. position in the Filter menu)

This will open the same dialog as wen you open a RAW image.

Not to confuse you, but optionally you could:
- Choose the menu Filter -> Convert to Smart Object (2. position in the filter menu)
- Then do step 2 from above.

The advantage of this is that your Smart Object will contain the unedited version of your JPG and the filter is applied non destructively. Meaning, you can re-adjust the camera raw adjustments you made.

Hope this helps...

I haven't gotten to try that yet, but that sounds like exactly what I was wanting!  I think it's a lot easier for a novice like me to edit in RAW than directly in Photoshop.  Thank you very much!  I'm looking forward to trying that later today.

I just tried it and that worked perfectly!  Thank you so much for helping me out!  Is there some way I can give you "thanks" on here or boost your support rating?

Closing the loop and acknowledging your question is answered is thanks enough.

Well, thank you very much!  I've been flying through editing prom pictures for a friend's niece.  They really appreciate it as well.
