Photography: Raw File Support - Requests and Information?

I just got a new camera and Camera Raw and/or Lightroom does not recognize the raw files, has no camera-specific profiles or has some features not enabled. What do I do?

Daniel, can you please clarify which thumbnails you're referring to? i.e., where are you looking for the thumbnails? If you're talking about the thumbnails / icons of the files in the Finder, that's something the OS (i.e., Mac OS X) takes care of.

Yes Eric... you're absolutely right... It's not just Adobe. My point is, Canon came up with a new RAW file that nobody can manage to grasp.

Maybe it was the RAW FILE nemesis that flung out the old (worked perfectly fine) bath water just to mess with all of us to upgrade every piece of software on planet Jaypeg?

Who's responsible? Let's get 'em! Let's hang 'em by his toes!

Apple (not on the same page)

Adobe (working hard, working on weekends, really hard work on working on it hard)

Windows (huh?)

Nikon (same problem)

Pro Photo (huh uh, not yet)

NIK (NOPE)

Portrait Professional (convert it before you can use it)

Toast 11 Pro (not so fast mr.! We don't recognize this file type go back to file school)

More than likely it's some little green man who put a kink in all the software and he's holding the real RAW for ransom!

Yeah, that's it.

LOL! This whole experience is a farce. It's like the old "Who's on first" bit.

I'm so tired of guessing, and converting and cross checking that I think I'll start programing a find the green man program and eat him with my purple girl!

Now, if you get all that, you're probably as frustrated as I am.

Peace.

Thanks to all your comments and help for my 5D Mark lll problem, guess I will have to upgrade my software although I really did not want to do that. Seems redundant to always HAVE to buy another version but I suppose that is what keeps the economy alive such as it is.

Thanks again everyone.

See the article in the official response at the top of this page. Use the free DNG Converter 6.6 for support of this camera in Elements 9.

Elements 9 works good in and , but when I hit full EDIT the screen dims and says there is a problem. It looks for a solution on line then closes the program. I have the priginal disc but it won't reload.

Elements 9 has worked well for a year. Occasionally it would dim and shut down in EDIT. Now whenever I go from ORGANIZE to EDIT the program stops working. When I try to search for a solution on line, it closes. Can I delete the program and reload it from the original disc?

I have Photoshop Elements 8 for Windows. I also recently bought a Canon EOS 600. Photoshop 8 is refusing to open the RAW files from this camera, but will open RAW from earlier EOS models. Message is "Cannot open "....CR2" because it is the wrong type of file.

This is normal. The most direct choices are to update your Elements to the current version, or use the Adobe DNG Converter, available as part of the ACR updates, and convert your CR2 files to DNG files, which will then be compatible with older versions of ACR.

Why won't Photoshop 6 support NEF files from a Nikon D800 camera? Photoshop 5.5 seems to be able to support those RAW files, but the subsequent Photoshop version will not. Since I wouldn't want to buy PS 5.5 if PS 6 is right around the corner, I'm stuck having to wait for some kind of update.

PS-CS6 is a BETA and part of a large group of new programs. To get the new Suite tested and bugfixed and boxed and out the door the first week of May, functionalty had to be frozen some months ago, before the D800 was available to Adobe for profiling.

If you look at the date of the Camera RAW 7 BETA plugin, it is February 9th, while the date of the ACR 6.7 update for PS-CS5.x is April 20th.

I would expect PS-CS6 to either include an updated ACR7 that handles some of the newer cameras, or an update to ACR7.1 to be released sooner rather than later.
