Lightroom/Camera Raw & DNG: Convert to DNG Photos not autorotated

Question

I've noticed this for a while now. If I try to import from Lightroom and select convert to DNG on import, none of the photos autorotate.  For example pictures taken in portrait with the camera are displayed in landscape, it's like the metadata is lost or ignored.  This is not an issue if I don't convert to DNG.  I've been using Lightroom about 10 years and this is only something I've noticed in recent versions.  I'm currently using a Nikon D750 on Mac 10.14.

I wonder if the rotation metadata is an issue as I don't see this on either my Canon or Sony cameras. I convert to DNG upon import. Is there perhaps some setting on the camera that needs a double check?

Yes I would assume this was the issue but autorotate is on in the camera, if that even effects rotation in Lightroom I've never tried turning it off.  I only have this problem if converting to dng. If using the Nikon raw files there isn't an issue.  So something is being lost in the dng conversion, does anyone have a Nikon D750 they can test this with?
