Lightroom/Camera Raw: Cannot merge panorama after updating to 10.14.6

Since upgrading to OS 10.14.6, Lightroom Classic (8.3.1) cannot merge (21 frame) panoramic images. Just sits there forever and does nothing.

It's not limited to a MBP - same problem here on a Mac Mini 2018 / i7. It's not limited to LR but freezes also CameraRaw in Photoshop as soon as you work with DNGs. Call the CameraRaw-team...

For the record, my issue was specifically with any panos that were 21 frames -- same thing > DJI (Mavic 2) Pro drone. James, what might be helpful for the Lightroom team is to shoot them a Dropbox/Google Drive link to the DJI pano frames so that they can test it.

Thanks Ray... I can fire them the shots no problem if they need. However for me it's "anything". I've tried with a number of different DJI (same drone) shots, variable shot counts, plus Sony Camera shots. Perhaps tried around 10 different pano's shot over the last couple of days and nothing will merge.

I'm using a Canon 5Ds. Having problems with anything regarding dng-fileformat. Exporting cr2 is no problem, exporting dng freezes. Creating HDRs does not work, creating panoramas does not work. Working with cr2 is no problem at all.

Set up a completly fresh 10.14.6, installed only Lightroom - same problems. LR freezes as long as dng-file format is created/exported.

Free disk space: 200GB

As far as I can see LR uses only one core while processing dng

Thanks for your input on this issue so far folks. Any thoughts on a solve? To recap and add clarifications...

a) Panorama creation impossible, either hangs at the merge step or the preview step (can't determine a pattern but it seems related to image set). Affects both Panorama and HDR Panorama.
b) General operations definitely slower, frequent spinning wheels while browsing library, trying to enter develop module, etc (having never seen any in the past 12 months of heavy use - 20,000 images per year). 
c) Issue occurs to files from multiple devices (Sony Camera and DJI Drone), across multiple (all) image sets. Panoramas created in the past using Lightroom will now not recreate from the same source files. 
d) Lightroom 8.4 & Mac OS 10.14.6.
e) HDR merge does work (but anecdotally seems slower).
f) The same files will merge using PTGUI and Photoshop (but Photoshop won't create a dng pano output).
g) Have copied my sys info above.
h) I've already tried purging the camera raw cache and disabling the GPU acceleration and various other combinations of memory allocation, performance settings etc.

Just at the time Lightroom should have sped up with 8.4, for me at least it's become virtually unusable, possibly in relation to 10.14.6.

I wouldn’t mind trying a set that’s failing for you, see if I can reproduce it on any of my machines. If we can reproduce it on demand, there’s a much better chance of it being fixed quickly. Dropbox or www.wetransfer.com to uploads@lightroomqueen.com would work.

James, roughly how long did that take you previously to merge? And it's an HDR Pano, right? It's been pegging 100% CPU for about 30 minutes so far, using about 10GB of my 16GB of RAM, and it's made it to about 40% of the way across. Is that what you're seeing?

It's still at the same point after an hour. I've just tried it on Paul's Mac Pro and it was done in about 20 seconds.

If LR shows the beach ball when you try to work on while creating the HDR or pano then yes, that's what we see. In this case it's also not possible to quit LR in a regular way. Try to export a dng as tif - does it work? Here it took a week ago 20-30 seconds to merge 5 shots of my 5Ds to one HDR. Now it takes 15-20 minutes.

Hi Victoria, it seems you are seeing exactly what I'm seeing. Before the last few days, to merge around 15 HDR Pano Shots (yes it's an HDR Pano) from the drone in the past I'm used to it taking around 3 mins max on my MacBook pro. The Sony shots take longer, but they are bigger files. I've previously merged 70 shots from the Sony on this MacBook and it took around 20 minutes.

Thank you for your input here Victoria. Yep that's what I saw, maxed CPU for around an hour (and very hot laptop) and stuck at around 40% ish, on a file set that I know in the past would have taken only a couple of minutes to process. Unfortunately, I don't have a Mac Pro to hand :)

...btw, I have also tried converting the bracketed shots to HDR prior to attempting to create the panorama (in this case, creating 5 DNG's from the 5x3 Brackets). The "HDR" DNG files will create (although, anecdotally, slower than I'd expect them to), but the panorama will not create from those 5 files either.

Now that you are able to reproduce the problem, what's coming next? Is there a chance for an update within the next days? Has Adobe tested this issue with Mac OS 10.15? Please excuse that I'm quite impatient - would like to finish my jobs here but without HDR and panoramas it's not possible. Don't really want to create a non-RAW-panorama with another software but if there will not be a solution available for this problem very soon I fear that I have to because I have to finish the jobs...

Having been able to reproduce it on a specific machine, we're a lot closer to Adobe being able to reproduce too. When they can, they can then start figuring out the cause, and then a solution. Then it'll go through testing and then get pushed over to the downloads team to get an update out. Realistically, probably be a few weeks.

BTW a few weeks are far too long - started a tif-export 8 hours ago (14 cr2-images), system has not finished it by now! LR is unusable!
EDIT: ok, now it's finished... maybe the system was in stand-by because I turned off the screen. Despite this I would really appreciate it if someone official will prioritise this.

FYI, tests directly in Camera Raw (launched from Bridge) yield exactly the same results. Regardless of whether the preview shows, the panorama will not create.

I walked all the way with the support incl. a screen sharing session (case ADB-8411867-Z0D5). Wondering why the support knows more than the official LR-Reps here. Two support members talked about a changed method of memory caching used in 10.14.6 which makes it incompatible to LR. Apple says that Adobe got 10.14.6 months before public and had enough time to react to changes made with this update. And now nobody from the official side can reproduce it? It's really obvious that something went completely wrong.

I'm very jealous of your situation Robert. I've come to rely on the DNG output from Panorama's in Photoshop & Lightroom. However, for example, I just tried to use the "Auto-Stack" feature in Bridge (a feature which requires the software to parse the DNG file) and Bridge crashed. This is indicative of what I'm finding now across the whole Adobe Stack which shares Camera Raw.

Like I said,  "so far".   Hopefully it will keep working.   : ).   In a post above you said you would upload some of your pano photos for others to try.  I haven't seen a link.  The pano I tried was 11 photos from a Canon 5DMark2.  I also tried other smaller ones and they all merged fairly quickly.  Some wouldn't merge with "perspective" but that happened previously for some panos.

Hi Robert, yes I sent some files to Victoria on the dropbox link she posted, but the point is, it's all panorama files, from more than one capture device, including any of the many panorama's that I've previously successfully merged in the past using the Lightroom.

I'm as certain as I can be that it's nothing to do with the files or devices...

As far as I can see LR uses 280% of CPU (3 cores) while creating the HDR-preview but falls back to nearly 100% (1 core only) when really creating the DNG, with or without graphics acceleration. Seems to be a problem with the CPU, maybe (Intel core i7 3,2GHz here).

Inquiry, in relation to Apple MAC OS, and possiblility of CACHE methods/locations/whatever (mentioned above)

Would/Does dleating all existing CACHE files (all, not just Aobe) help??

And a link on how to safely do that??

Under the concept of junk, clutter, trash, can the Apple CACHE files be causing grief, I assume most never ever clear that stuff out

Hi David, I've cleared all cache, trash, etc etc, including using Onyx to run a full system clean. It free'd up lots of drive space and made my mac a bit faster in general, but has made no difference to Lightroom, Photoshop or Camera Raw.

Do not forget to clear out your Deleated folder (collects dust) and Download folder (really need that stuff) as they eat up disk space. And lack of disk space can foul LR up

Aright, so cancel my previous note about everything working again... I clearly did not try some of my larger panos. Back to status quo -- Lightroom is not merging my larger panos on 10.14.6. 

To help with the debugging of all this, I've recorded a video (and some curious CPU usage) showing which ones I can merge and which ones I can't... along with disk space, memory, etc. As I note in the video, it's almost like Lightroom loses interest at a certain point.

Exporting TIFs based on CR2 uses also only one CPU-core... it works but it takes much more time than usual. Maybe not only a DNG-problem...

I'm not using LR on a MBP but on a Mac Mini, same problems. Common factor is maybe i7?

Carlos, it's not new to 8.4, happens with previous too. It's specific to 10.14.6, didn't happen in 10.14.5. Tricky bit is it doesn't affect everyone on 10.14.6. My suspicion right now is onboard graphics (MacBooks/Mini's) or high memory usage.

@Rikk, merge of that test set completes on my iMac (unlike my 13" MBP) but the LR RAM usage remains at 16GB after it completes. Shouldn't that drop back down? Or have I just not noticed it before?

I reported earlier I wasn't having issues with my 2015 iMac but today the merge stopped on a 11 set pano I merged 2 days ago. It sat for over an hour and I canceled the pano.  Then other panos would not merge, even 4 photos.  A restart of Lr didn't help.  I had to restart the computer to get the pano function going again.  Lr 8.4. MacOS 10.14.6

Just wondering if you had any update on this issue? Might there by an 8.4.1 patch coming soon that would resolve this issue? I would be happy to be on a beta list if it meant getting the patch early, as it's really debilitated my workflow for both large panos and large HDR's. Thanks in advance.

Just adding to this. Would also be happy to help out with beta testing. Alternatively I have to jump ship to a different toolset at 80% of what I shoot is now unprocessable.

I see this too on my MacBook Pro 13”, but not on my MacMini 2018. The most obvious difference between the two machines is that I use a BlackMagic eGPU to feed the two 4K displays on my MacMini, while on the laptop I see it when I use the laptop without any extra hardware. That could point to the Intel GPU on the laptop. Turning on/off GPU acceleration on the laptop does not make a difference, though.
