Cropping behavior in Adobe Camera Raw

Cropping behavior in Adobe Camera Raw (12.4.0.55) changed a few months ago, and for me it is very frustrating. The photo behind the cropping frame moves instead of the cropping frame resizing while the photo remains stationary. It's inefficient, hard to control and aggravating. Adobe needs to change the behavior back, or offer a legacy option. I've been using it for the past two months plus, and I'm not used to it. Please change it back or give us a legacy option. Please hit the up arrow on the left side of this post to vote to make this change. That count ties directly into Adobe's bug/feature tracking.

I am sorry that some people do not like the change to the crop tool in ACR. I like the change much better than the way it used to work.

There's an option in Photoshop to use classic mode for the cropping tool. So I'm asking that to be an option in ACR also. I do almost all of my cropping in ACR when I'm making other adjustments to tone, color, etc. With the new cropping mode, I'm making about twice as many clicks and drags to crop each photo than I do with classic mode. When I'm processing hundreds of photos, this adds unnecessary time. Opening all those photos in Photoshop just to crop them would be even more inefficient.

If you are experiencing this same frustration, please like and comment on this post, or otherwise bring it to the attention of Adobe to let them know the need to change cropping behavior in ACR, or give us a classic or legacy option. This is not something I want to simply get used to because it adds extra steps to every crop. I've gotten used to other changes over the years, but this one does not work for me. Are you having the same frustration?

Even more effective would be to hit the voting arrows on the left side of the original post. That count ties directly into our bug/feature tracking.

Agreed and liked. When adobe makes such massive changes to usability, a "legacy" option MUST be offered for hard-core usurers...Adobe's most loyal customers!

I hate how the image is full fit to the screen in normal mode, but when I select the crop tab, the image goes smaller.
Adobe have royally fcked up.

Yeah that sizing thing is annoying.

Totally agree.  Who frames their photos by locking off the camera and sliding the world around?

This is my signature.  There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Well said. When I write on a page, I move my pen on the paper - I don't move the paper under my pen.

I wrote about this same issue in late June and again in Early July - I would hope Adobe is aware of this.  I just don't understand why they have not affected a fix for this.  I really like the analogy just presented to me - it's like trying to write your name using a stationary pen and moving the paper.  Not at all efficient.  Offering the 'classic' mode would be a solution just as they did when they tried doing this in PS a few years ago - and look at what we have now - the 'classic' mode.  Please let's hope Adobe will listen.

Mike,

I read and liked some of your posts/comments. I'm glad you like that analogy. I thought of that when Ash said his comment above about moving the world. Rikk's comment above (Adobe Administrator) leads me to think that they pay attention when people use the voting buttons above, so spread the word to others about this post and others that point out the frustration of ACR users with the changes to the cropping tool.

I will mention this to my Friday Night Photoshop group - stand by for a bunch of votes!

Honestly, I don't care if it's logical or not. More importantly: cropping behavior needs to be CONSISTENT across all adobe applications (This includes "classic" mode options.)

This is the same for panning and zooming behavior in Adobe Camera Raw: it's inconsistent with Photoshop, which is completely baffling. I want to use the scroll wheel to zoom in our out while using other tools, and the scroll wheel just makes the brush bigger and smaller.

This makes no sense to people who use multiple adobe applications heavily...to make a living. Adobe needs to get their head right before the alienate the people who pay hundreds of dollars a year for the pleasure of frustration.

Agreed, it's completely unusable on deadline and I reverted back to the version previous and have not updated since. Asking for a legacy option to toggle on/off between the updated version and the previous one shouldn't be meeting resistance. The analogy about the stationary pen and moving paper is bang on.

After all these months the issue remains, someone at Adobe please make this a priority.

Thanks Darryl. If you haven't already, please click the up arrow at the top of this thread to indicate to Adobe that this is something they need to correct.
