Camera Raw: Saved Super Resolution DNG embedded preview is not sized correctly

I converted a raw file DSC_0042.NEF to a Super Resolution DNG using ACR 13.2. This created a file called DSC_0042-Enhanced.dng. Before exiting ACR, I chose to Save the new file as well (right-click Save Image->Save Image...), selecting the DNG format, Camera Raw 12.4 and later Compatibility, Medium Size JPEG Preview and Embed Fast Load Data. This created a file called DSC_0042-Enhanced_1.DNG.

After exiting ACR, I imported the original NEF and the two Super Resolution DNGs into Lightroom Classic 10.2 with Embedded & Sidecar Preview option set.

Here is a shot of the images in the LrC's Library Grid view.

Notice the preview of DSC_0042-Enhanced_1.DNG. It is not sized correctly, showing only the (large) top left corner of the image. The preview of the DSC_0042-Enhanced.dng is sized correctly, showing the full image.

Looks like a bug in ACR's Save Image option.

This is a known issue scheduled for fix in the next release.

@Rikk I converted a huge batch of enhanced DNGs using super resolution. They show the enhanced resolution in bridge but original resolution in Lightroom and photoshop on iOS. Will the fix be for how Adobe apps read or write these files?(ie am I going to have to convert everything again or will my existing files still be usable?) Thanks for your time.

You should not have to reconvert.

Hi, thanks for the good description of the problem!

Is the preview in Lr the only issue, how does it preview in Bridge, or in ACR's filmstrip? does the file open properly in all software?

This also happens with Super Resolution DNG files synced to the Cloud. The uploaded image is cropped in the Web app similar to the LrC filmstrip screenshot Anthony provided. See below post for more details.

You do not have to save the Enhanced DNG file yourself. It is automatically saved upon creation, as you can see from the fact that you now have two copies.

I know I don't have to save (another copy), but I wanted a copy with DNG extension, not dng. As far as I know, I can't set the case of the file extension for the initially saved Enhanced file.

Previews of Super Resolution images are not rendered correct in Lightroom. The following example shows the preview as it appears first when the image is opened in Develop Module. The second is the one that appears some time later (sometimes if even requires to jump back to the library and then back to develop).

If you go back from develop to library the same wrong preview is shown in the library.

before (the wrong preview)

after (correct)

Did you check the performance monitor to see if it was still rendering and exporting the image? This is a slow process and unless you have a very fast computer, it might not have yet been ready to display. This is a not uncommon problem when returning a large image from Photoshop, I've had it happen with large focus stacks. There is a synchronization/communication issue between PS and LR whereby the switch to LR occurs before it is ready to display the issue. Sometimes, though not as often as in prior versions, it was necessary to shutdown and restart LR to even see the returned image. Of course it will be better when we have the Super Resolution function in LR.

No Performance Monitor was not running. Also the file explorer shows the wrong preview. Also restarts do not help. The problem always reappears.

I had several issues after importing a jpg into LR Classic after running through ARC enhance "Super Resolution" function.  The image was created on a smart phone with resolution of 1536 X 2048.  I used ARC enhance resolution to up-size the resolution to 3072 X 4096 and save as a DNG.  Then I imported into LR Classic.  It looked fine in the library module but when I tried to open in the develop module I could only see 1/4 of the image.  I tried changing the zoom and creating a 1:1 but still could only see 1/4 of the image.  In addition, LR Classic failed to find the "face" after turning on the people view.  I even tried placing a box around the face.   Still could not find it.  The original jpg worked just fine in both cases.
