Camera Raw 9.5/Lightroom CC 2015.5/6.5: Moving sliders causes image colors to dim and brighten

Update to latest LR: Now, moving sliders causes image colors to dim and brighten in a psychedelic way!. Not good. Makes you think video card is going.

Our engineers have narrowed this down to an issue in the drivers for AMD cards on OS X. We're working with Apple to track down a fix.

The the meantime, the workaround is to disable "Use Graphics Processor" in Lightroom https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-gpu-faq.html#troubleshooting or Camera Raw https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/acr-gpu-faq.html#Troubleshooting

The following AMD GPUs on Macs running El Capitan are blacklisted in Lr 6.6 because of reported driver issue with El Capitan: Radeon HD: 6330M, 6350M, 6370M, 6430M, 6450M, 6470M, 6490M, 6530M, 6550M, 6570M, 6630M, 6650M, 6730M, 6750M, 6770M, 6830M, 6850M, 6850M, 6870M, 6950M, 6970M, 6990M.

It is reasonable for Lightroom to take the step to blacklist these AMD GPUs until the driver issue is confirmed fixed in an Mac OS X update (see note). If you are sure to take the risk for working with the non-officially supported GPU with Lightroom. Try the following,

  1. Open Lightroom.
  2. Invoke Lightroom > Preferences... menu command
  3. When the Preferences dialog appears, select the Presets tab.
  4. Click on the button labeled “Show Lightroom Presets Folder...”
  5. Lightroom will reveal the root preset folder in the Finder/Explorer.
  6. Now goto http://adobe.ly/29TzG8f  and download the config.lua file and copy it into the root preset folder at step 5. The config.lua setting would instruct Lightroom to bypass the blacklisting anyway.
  7. Relaunch Lr.

Hope this helps,

Note: Apple has informed us that the driver issue with these AMD card *may* have been fixed with the latest Mac OS X 10.11.5. So it would be good to get some confirmation from the folks who reported the issue here either with the Lr CC 2015.5.1/ 6.5.1 or with Lr CC 2015.6/6.6 following the documented workaround described above (with Mac OS X 10.11.5 of course).

Psychedelic colours are almost certainly the graphics card or driver.

Only happens on image, no where else. tend to thing its the update. Had been using LR all night and then downloaded the update. Issue occurred only  after I downloaded and opened the update. Rest of the screen is fine. Other apps are fine. Only happens in LR.  Anyone else having this issue?

Yup, we've seen quite a number of people with psychedelic colours only on the image, usually fixed by a driver update.

OK, will check into that. Just happened after the update, so that is what makes LR suspect. Also happens when you crop your image and click to move around.

Curious though it only happened after the update. Also happens when you crop and move image around. will check into the driver.

Does this happen with all files or only specific ones?

It may help if we could see your Lightroom System Info with the Graphics Processor enabled (the state when you see the problem) Directions for sharing your system info from Lightroom:

Thanks. Couple more questions:

1) when you stop moving the slider and let go of the mouse, does the image still look odd, or only when you're scrubbing?
2) If it still looks odd after you release the mouse, can we get a copy of the raw file and the sidecar with the settings that are looking wonky?

Sliders — Only when mouse is active. Ok on release. Also occurs when you click on the moving the image/recropping. This started after update was installed.

Hi Robert, we still haven't been able to repro. Sounds like getting a raw file with the sidecar with the settings for the file you're having trouble with might be helpful to our team to repro. Would you be able to post one (Creative Cloud/dropbox url, etc).

Wow! Wonder if this is an age factor. My mac is 2011. Will be back later and video the issue. FYI. This issue is not limited to RAW. It's also Tiff, PSD.

I made the same experience. Whenever I hovered over the sliders or I tried to drag them in any direction it dims and lightens and I also get a reduced quality of the image looking as it would have been painted with a fineliner...
I switched of graphics acceleration and LR runs like before the update. I now will follow Chris Schwegler in switching off the UGP having already uninstalled LR and am now re-downloading the app. Let's see what happens...

No, does not help...

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Hardware acceleration playing up after update.

Lightroom updated a couple of days ago and now the screen flashes darker whenever I move a slider in develop module if graphics acceleration is turned on. Adobe really seem to have struggled with hardware acceleration implementation to me :( (using OSX El Capitan)

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Camera Raw / Lightroom - flicker in RAW.

Just updated to RAW 9.5 and Lightroom 6.5 and I'm experiencing the problem in both apps.

Whenever I make a change (exposure, contrast, highlights, blacks etc.) the image flickers. So there's no smooth transition, it just jumps around constantly from bright to dark and back again. It does end up with the correct result once I'm done but it's very difficult to see what I'm actually doing while doing it.

For future reference: Bo reported in the original topic that turning off the GPU in LR stopped the flickering.
