Support all IPTC Extension fields relating to Artwork or Object in Image

Adobe Lightroom (and Photoshop and Bridge) does not support the additional fields added in IPTC Extension 2014 that fall under Artwork or Object in Image. Some of these are necessary and standard in artwork cataloguing by artists, curators, galleries, collections, and museums. The lack of support for them in widely used Adobe products is holding back the use of these IPTC fields in general, and professionals must find ways to track and transmit this information in parallel with their image file handling.

Here's the full list, with fields that are currently supported in Lightroom Classic 8.4 marked in bold:

  • Artwork or Object in Image
    • Title
    • Content Description
    • Contribution Description
    • Physical Description
    • Date Created
    • Circa Date Created
    • Style Period
    • Creator
    • Creator ID
    • Source
    • Source Inventory Number
    • Source Inventory URL
    • Copyright Notice
    • Current Copyright Owner Name
    • Current Copyright Owner ID
    • Current Licensor Name
    • Current Licensor ID
The IPTC Standard has had three updates including other fields that are not supported in Lightroom as of September 2019: 2014, 2016, and 2017.1.

Typical data used to document artworks can be seen in the Association of Art Editors Style Guide, under “Catalogue Entries and Checklists,” and are typically also used in gallery labels and captions in various publications.
