Photoshop: Add SVG support

SVG is now a standard used quite widely in the web, and Photoshop would benefit grealy for letting SVG files be opened/placed directly in to the program.

It feels unnecessary to open the files first in Illustrator and then copy & paste them into Photoshop as smart objects.

The Photoshop CC 2015.1 update that was released today supports import/export of SVG: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/usi...

No, SVG is a complex format like PDF or EPS -- so it gets rasterized when brought into Photoshop just like PDF and EPS.

Funny. Fireworks CS6 (!) can import EPS files by shapes (every shape by layer) and save it into PSD, and New Photoshop can't. =(

I have an idea for Photoshop. It would be nice if I could import an SVG file and have the option to import as a raster, vector or photoshop shape. Further it would be cool to have the ability to do so on a directory of files for easier ability to combine them all into a photoshop shapes file.

Usage scenario:
I have a directory of several hundred svg files, each consisting of an individual icon. I'd like the ability to import all of these into a .CSH file.

Doesn't make sense how InDesign and Illustrator support it but not Photoshop. Smart object anyone?

Photoshop and the .SVG File Format.

Why doesn't Photoshop have the SVG file format included as default? A lot of people use it and it is becoming more and more used by website administrators. Advanced file format for an Advanced program? Wikipedia uses it, why not Adobe? If it is not possible to include it, why not make a plugin for users to download it (or give a link to download one).

How do we make feature requests? This should really get on the table. It's a couple of years now that Photoshop lags the support for svg and it starts to get increasingly annoying!

Hi Chris,
but is it going anywhere, I can remember this topic wandering around in boards for ages now. Is there any realistic chance to see this one coming during the next 6-9 months?
Thanks,
Fab

We can't say. But compared to other feature requests, this doesn't have a lot of support.

Totally same problem. I don't want to buy Illustrator just because I need to use svg-s as a shape sometime. And now, I go and check what Inkscape can do with my file.

Tim Riot also shared on Twitter that Adobe Generator for Photoshop can now export SVG files. The feature is in beta and here is how you can enable it:

SVG Support in Photoshop?.

This might have been asked a lot of times but - SVG support in Photoshop? Is this a big thing to ask for?

I know there's always the option to open up SVGs in Illustrator and then copy-paste them into Photoshop, but if the SVG is an external file ( for example ), you just received it from somewhere and need to use it as is - why open up another program?

At this point I am baffled why this isn't yet supported. I've seen countless features added that are of no use to me. As SVG is now a web standard, this is no longer a request or idea - it's a necessity.

before there was svg kit to help with this, but with the latest mac os x and adobe cc it doesn't work anymore.

Hi there, Hi Chris. I know this one lacks "a lot" of support, because mostly requested by a couple of graphic/web-designers, but I've just been asked advice on this scenario : getting a thousand of smaller svg files batched modified and placed into Photoshop to work with...

So far, scripting between Ps AND Ai makes the operation close to impossible without a high level of estk + js skills.

Having Ps export ("Generate") .svg is really good, now, let's import it too, exactly like .ai files... (paths, smart objects...)
