Camera Raw: HDR not working with 4 images or more. Error message Operation could not be completed

When using the latest version of Adobe Raw to create HDR images, I get a message error.  I could at first use 6 or 7 images if I wanted to without problems, now, I can use only 3 or I get a message error that the operation cannot be competed.

Hi Eric
I have already logged this with Adobe and the representative who spoke to me said it is a known issue and will be corrected in the next Adobe Camera Raw Update.
However there is a way round it but you just will not get a new raw file.
1. In ACR, Select all the images to convert to HDR
2. With them all selected, go to TOOLS / PHOTOSHOP / MERGE TO HDR PRO.
They will all open in Photoshop.
3. Tick remove Ghosts and Tick Complete Toning in Adobe Camera Raw.
4. Now click on the Tone in ACR button
5. your merged HDR image will now open in ACR where you can finish the toning and process to your liking.
6. click DONE and you now have your new HDR converted image open in photoshop.

Thank you so much Derek for your answer.   I tried and it it is technically working.  But I got my pictures far too dark compared to before.   Shall I use a different presets beside default?  I tried the other ones but the images doesn't get any better.  Can I download additional presets for HDR Pro?

They are darker than before because in the merge to HDR pro where it creates a new raw file it has Already made changes in Adobe Camera Raw, where as the method I have told you about ends up in adobe Camera Raw leaving the toning and setting up to you. In the method I have told you about, when you get your file in ACR I would suggest that you click on the auto button to give you a starting point.

For what it's worth... and this is no help I know... there are and have been several versions of ACR with issues such as this... from what I can see from your screen grab this is exactly the type of work I do, and with many previous versions of ACR I found that weird things happened with HDR and merge to panorama images. With a new ACR version this would stop working... then without any action it would work again.
Last week I had an awful time stitching TSE images together (one particular job) "dark banding" at the join, since then all other jobs have been fine.
So, all I can say is that it always happens after a new ACR update...
As I said no help just my 2c worth!

Hi Rikk.  I just updated Mojave to supply update, but it did not solve the issue I have with HDR and raw. But thank you for letting me know about that update.

I will.  But there are raw files from canon 5d mark 2.  I tried to convert the raw into adobe dng but the same thing is happening.  What doesn't make sense is that the first raws can be combined with HDR without problems (7 of them if I want to), but the rest of the shoot cannot.  Can you provide me an email address so I can send you the files with hightail.  Thank you

Here is a picture of 6 raw files combined via raw and HDR without problem.  But as I move on it stops working.  Pictures were shoot with same camera same settings.  I will send you the files.  Here is the picture of HDR working.

I get exactly the same problem as Adobe only currently allows a maximum of 4 files to be processed. try using the middle 4 files to merge to HDR and I bet it works.

Like I have said Adobe is aware of this bug and say that it will be fixed at the next update.

Just to point out this bug is not consistent...
Two sets of five images from a job yesterday, one merged to HDR, the other didn't!
For what its worth I wouldn't normally use more than 3 images... BUT I do frequently use 9 images for HDR Panorama -2 0 +2  x3 images with shift lens... I haven't tried this yet!

Peter and Derek, just to confirm. do you have the supplemental 10.14.6 update installed.



This patch, which came out on Monday, has fixed merging issues for most customers. If you have that patch installed, and you're still having trouble, send me a link to the set of files that won't merge for you. jtranber at adobe dot com

Can I reinstall earlier version of Camera Raw?

I installed The patch and run Mojave 10.14.6 and nothing got solved.  I am sending you 6 raw files that do not want to combined together as HDR

Hi Jeffrey.  I just send you 6 raw files via hightail that cannot be HDR merged and from the same shoot 6 raw files that can.  I hope you are able to see what is going on.  Thank you.

Just got informed in another treat that downloading Raw 11.3.1 fix the issue.  I just did and it works as before.

My Adobe Creative cloud app indicates that my Adobe Camera Raw App is up to date.
I still cannot Merge to HDR more than 4 raw images.
How do I find out what version of Adobe camera raw I have installed?
How do you download Raw 11.3.1 other than via the Creative Cloud updater?

It's not possible to change Camera Raw Version in Creative Cloud.
But I found a description how to do it there:

I went back to Camera Raw 11.3. and installed it that way. Now HDR braketing with more pictures is working again.

Thank you all for your help. Yes going back to Camera raw 11.3 solved my problem.  I just downloaded raw 11.3 and it works.

I have the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw which still only lets you convert a maximum of 4 raw files to HDR, so let us hope that Adobe fix the situation and launch a new version of ACR

I downloaded camera raw 11.3.1 for the link listed below but the next day the link got deactivated and doesn't offer anymore previous raw version.  Why is such a rush in talking away previous raw versions that solved the flaws from the current raw version.
