The XMP files are "sidecar" files that hold the metadata for your raw camera images for use in Bridge/ACR. You could elect to use the ACR database instead of these sidecar files if you wished (I personally prefer the sidecar files). Bridge Camera Raw Preferences > General: Save image settings in...
You should be able to hide the sidecars from display with the view menu > show hidden files command.
The icon is MS Excel based as that is what the Bridge or perhaps OS file type association is set to for whatever reason. Bridge Preferences > File Type Associations
XMP files are not hidden files, so the View > Show Hidden Files menu should not show/hide them. The explanation is probably that the File Type Associations are not set correctly in the System. Bridge Preferences > File Type Associations does not show XMP files however, so you can't correct it there.
