Solved

Bridge has stopped working.

I was sorting through about 1100 photos from a shoot recently, using the space bar to see full-screen images and assigning "stars" with numbers keys.  This is AFTER waiting for an hour for the program to populate the window with thumbnails and collect criteria for the filter panel.

Bridge froze a couple times.  I had to "force quit" a couple times then tried a restart hoping that would reset everything and calm it down.  Now the application won't start at all.  When I click the dock icon, I immediately get a Trouble Report window: "Bridge quit unexpectedly".  Same thing if I try to open it from the CC panel.

I'm using all the most current OS and CC updates.  A Mac Pro (trash can).

Any help is much appreciated.  Or recommendations for an alternate to Bridge, though I don't want to fool with importing as with LR.  And besides which, can I depend on LR classic being around?   This is my livelihood.

OH and things I've tried:  uninstalled, reinstalled twice.  once after running Adobe CC Cleanup (or whatever it's called).  Numerous restarts and a couple shutdowns and start ups.  

Photoshop is running fine, and I'm limping along using Canon DPP to preview and convert to TIF--the latter I do anyway...

That's the worst I've heard anyone experience. You've rebooted your computer? And sorry about this, but it could be a hiccup in the folder you were using that farkled everything. I hate that when there is a problem, Bridge automatically starts up right at the same folder and you can't get around it except by purging everything, including cache, on startup. I've found that the uninstall, reinstall routine often leaves a lot untouched. Another problem is purging cache on startup doesn't always work, either. It can be necessary to delete it manually.

I'd recommend an alternative to Bridge if I'd found one. I'm on a Mac, too. I've found none that take the place of Bridge, so suffer with it's poor behavior, and keep hoping Adobe will one of these days finally treat it like the prince it could be instead of the poor relation.

Thanks for the ideas--I appreciate the help!  I tried the shift+option+command thing just now with no luck, found the cache folders in Finder and deleted everything including entire old versions of Bridge cache.  Emptied trash.  No luck.  I'm about ready to pull the plug on this patient, end its suffering.

AND I may have found a worthy replacement in Capture One or Media Pro SE.  Not sure what all they do or how they work in conjunction with PS.  Maybe Adobe is reading this...

Hi,

Can you please suggest the Adobe Bridge build number you are having on you Mac pro. You can get the build number single click over "Adobe Bridge CC 2018.app", and the build number will be shown in right pane of Finder.

Also, please suggest you Mac OS build number. This information can be retrieved from Menu -> Apple Menu -> About this Mac,.

Please suggest the above information to investigate this further.

Yes, the number for Bridge is 8.0.1.282   For the Mac it's 10.13.2 (17C205)

Thank you for investigating!  I also noticed the Bridge app is 1.15 GB--seems really big.  Is that right?

Mine's the same version, same size app 1.15GB (that IS big), but El Capitan.  I'm sure they'll check back with you. 

I just looked at Phase One's Media Pro. It's a catalog system like LR, sort of. I use Neo Finder to catalog my offline files—it catalogs anything at all, not just image formats. It will also work with any file you have on your mounted disks—they don't need to be offline, and you can have folders watched, etc—but I don't use it for that. I find I prefer a browser for mounted disks because I tend to move things around a lot and it's just easier to organize in a Browser/Finder type system.

And most of all, I need Stacks. I do mostly composite imagery and need stacks to keep not only the photos I'm working with organized, but the composite elements I use.  If I need an owl instead of a duck, it's in a stack of owls, not ducks.<G>

I wish you the best of luck getting an answer quickly. And yes, I hope Adobe management pays some attention to these threads so they know how important Bridge is to many of us, and how easy for some of us to change apps entirely if they don't come through soon— even if it's not going to be at all easy for me to walk away from it.

I meant to post an update--problem solved!  I did end up having to lobotomize my computer, though.  Did a complete "clean" install of High Sierra.  But I really needed to do that anyway, I had migrated my laptop of 2009 into the current Mac Pro in 2013, so there were several pounds of smoldering dead apps and files laying around that really needed to go.  I went from using 50% of my start-up drive to about 10%!  Lots of niggling little annoyances are rectified too, so I think it was just the universe telling me to get organized.  

Now I can stop wringing my hands and get back to photos.

The good news is that cleaning up your computer did bring Bridge back and hopefully there's not going to be any kind of incompatibility going on with it now. I'm relieved that the effort paid off.  I'd read shortly before High Sierra came out that we should probably do a clean install. Some were saying that the new format could be a problem if we simply migrated, although others contradicted it. Maybe they were the ones who keep everything spic and span on their computer. I don't, along with millions of other lazy folk like me.<G>

Yep, likewise.  I don't have any interest in being an IT department.  It's a necessity is all.
