Bridge: Clear Settings does not work with PSD FIles

When trying to use Bridge menu Edit> Develop Settings> Clear Settings with a PSD file that selection is grayed out and not usable. It works with all other file formats (raw, JPEG, TIFF), but not PSD even with 'Maximize Compatibilty' applied.

This is because PSD is not a file format that supports RAW editing external to the file. JPG, TIFF, DNG and RAW formats all work because they support either sidecar XML or embedded XMP as processing instructions.

You can open the file from Photoshop as Camera RAW, though. Choose File>Open... and click on Options in the dialog. You can then select your Photoshop file and choose Camera RAW from the Format menu.

This will open the file in the Camera RAW editor, and you can adjust the file's exposure and other settings like any other RAW file. The difference is that other applications won't respect the develop settings until you develop the PSD into something else. Even if you open the PSD in Photoshop as a Photoshop file (and not as RAW), you will not see your RAW edits. You will only see the RAW setting results in the RAW editor and when you either click Open Image or Save Image..., which will develop the PSD.

James thank you for your reply. Let me explain the issue in more detail. A user in the PS Forum (see below link) has inadvertently saved XMP camera raw develop settings to some PSD files. He wants to remove them so his client can view them without those embedded XMP develop settings being applied inside Lightroom.

For the record embedded camera raw XMP develop settings data can be written into PSD files the same as with JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and DNG. When using Bridge menu Edit> Develop Settings> Clear Settings the embedded XMP develop settings are succesfully removed from all of the above mentioned file formats EXCEPT PSD. That is the issue I am reporting. I hope this makes it clearer. Thank you!

Understood, and I see what's happening. Photoshop and LR are writing Camera RAW adjustments to the XMP (as it should), but Bridge isn't recognizing PSD as a RAW-capable image file. I can verify this by looking at the XMP before and after RAW touch-up. I also tested this with Bridge CC 2017, so it's a long-standing issue, at least on Mac and based on this thread, Windows.

James thank you for the confirmation. I've done some more investigation on the root cause of this issue.

Lightroom can import and process raw, DNG, JPEG, PNG, PSD, and TIFF files including layered files in both RGB and CMYK file format. In the case of layered PSD files they must be saved with 'Maximize Compatibility' checked. All of these file formats can have their LR Develop settings saved to XMP metadata in the file with exception of raw files, which use XMP sidecars.

It appears the Adobe Camera Raw Plugin and Bridge can only see, apply and clear XMP Develop settings in raw, DNG, JPEG, and TIFF file formats. PSD and PNG file format are not supported.

Lightroom and PS both use the same ACR plugin so why the difference? Depending on the response from Adobe this could remain as a "Bug" Report" or become a "Feature Request."

Thank you Stephen. Lightroom can be used to reset the develop settings back to their 0 default values and then save these settings to the PSD file. This doesn't remove the XMP CRS data, but accomplishes the objective of allowing import of the PSDs into LR with no settings applied.

The request here is to allow this capability native to Adobe Bridge along with ability to open PSDs using Adobe Camera Raw plugin. It appears to be a legacy PS/ACR/Bridge decision carried forward for no specific reason. Lightroom has capability for over 10 years now and uses the same Camera Raw plugin as PS. It's a long overdue change that should be easy for Adobe to implement or "fix" depending on your point of view.

Thanks Todd, my link was just a short term fix to a Bridge Script or ExifTool command to remove the CRS metadata from PSD or other formats, outside of the native capabilities. Although it is possible to make the values zero rather than removing them it would take more work.

Yes, bringing ACR on par with Lightroom would be nice, this is probably a product positioning/marketing decision rather than a technical one.

Stephen, those are much appreciated short-term fixes. Adobe has has done a good job of integrating LR with PS using the Edit in PS (CTRL + E) command. That function in fact uses the Adobe Camera Raw plugin in the background to apply the develop settings and open the image in PS. So this capability has already been implemented. The only reason I can see why it hasn't been added to Bridge is because nobody has requested it.
