Always generating thumbnails or previews

I have to do extensive metadata editing in Bridge and it is almost impossible. Bridge is constantly generating prevews or thumbnails and either takes forever or just times out, especially over a server. Have tried all combination of cache / preview / preferences and nothing helps. If I'm in the same folders with the same images why does it constantly have to keep generating the same preview over and over? Impossible to work and causing lost time and money.
