Photoshop Elements: Runtime C++ error when launching Editor
I have Windows 7 64 bit OS. I have PSE8 and PSE9 on my computer. I can get into PSE organizer and editor fine. When I upgraded to PSE9, everything worked fine for about 9 months then received a Run Time C++ error that did not allow me to get into the editor. I can still get into the organizer. So to sum it up. PSE8 works fine, PSE 9 can't use the editor. I was told to post to this site to provide feedback since I have been on a decision with "Bill" fromt he manufacture on the amazon site on providing feedback to PSE9 purchasing. Hope you can help. I want to be a loyal Adobe customer and while it may be a bug caused by a 3rd party program, my computer is a working computer with no fluff or gaming and I keep it clean and updated. PSE* is "compatible" with all the 3rd party programs but PSE9 is not for whatever reason. Please help!

Hello Ann,
Try this step, as it is what resolved it for Mr. EB, and let me know if it also fixes things for you. If not, we will try some other steps.
1. Navigate to: C:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\9.0\Locale\en_us
2. Rename MediaDatabase.db3 to MediaDatabase.old
3. Relaunch Photoshop Elements Editor.

Ann, what troubleshooting steps did you do?
Did you try to reset the preferences? to reinstall?
Do you remember if you installed another software around the same time? -

I tried this. It worked for a few minutes, then I was back to my runtime error again.

I am recently experiencing proglems with my Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 program. When I try to use the editor, I am receiving a runtime error message. I have a screen capture image of this error message, and also a capture of another error message that I'm receiving when attempting to access the catalog. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am running Windows 7, Service Pack 1, and the specific runtime error is Microsoft C++ error from the Adobe .exe file for the editor.

Ok, here's what happens, I have no Program Data that I can find. I do have however Program Files(86) which has Adobe. When I search Adobe for Photoshop 9 I get Photoshop Elements 9 (Wednesday September 28, 2011 10:42pm). I then get locale, locales and locale.ver. The first 2 have en_us but when I go to both of them there is no MediaDatabase in either of them. The last says not to open.
HELP!!!!!!-
Program Data is a hidden folder at the root of your C: drive on Windows Vista and 7. If you are using either of these two OS's, you will have to enable viewing hidden files and folders. By default, a file search will exclude hidden files and folders (even if you have enabled viewing them).
Program Data is a replacement for this folder on Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\. From that path, the rest is the same. -

I had the same problem, and this fixed worked. However, I would like to know more about what caused the problem in the first place.
-
Frankly, so would we. Best guess is that there is a shared third-party application between the users who have encountered this issue. But so far no common thread has been discovered.

I developed the problem while working on .dng files I received from my sister. It was the first time I had handled .dng files, and I edited about 15 of them before the error occurred.
-
Working with DNG files doesn't appear to be the source of the issue. I work quite often with DNG files. Also, the file in question here, MediaDatabase.db3, doesn't have anything to do with DNG. That is probably just coincidental.

Ok, while editing more photos (raw images from my Cannon), I developed the same error again. However, this time when I went through the same directory structure, there is no MediaDatabase file to be found. Any other ideas?

Not having this file is pretty strange. The file is read during each launch and if it cannot be found then a new one is created. If the file is not present, that means that the program hasn't launched successfully since the last time the file was deleted. But there is no function within Photoshop Elements to delete this file, it can only be deleted manually. So, if PSE launched fine and then suddenly will not launch without error and this file is no longer present, something very bizarre, and outside the normal range of the issue disscussed on this forum post, has happened.
Was the Effects or Content panel blank the last time you were able to launch the Editor successfully? -

"Runtime Error! Program C:\Program Fi...This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
I'm getting very frustrated because this error message keeps popping up. I have a new Windows computer with PSE 7 on it. It worked fine for awhile, then I suddenly started getting this error message every time I tried to launch PSE. I finally unistalled it then reinstalled it and it worked for about a day before I started getting the same error message again.
My bro-in-law thought maybe PSE7 wasn't compatible with my new computer, so I downloaded the trial version of PSE10 to see if that helped. It worked fine for quite a few days. Then one day I opened the organizer to download pics from my camera and after that, I started getting this same error message whenever I try to open the Editor. So apparently dowloading version 10 didn't matter. It seems like using the Organizer triggered the problem?? I really need to use PSE to finish up some Christmas gifts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have installed PSE 9 and PRE 9 and cannot open Organizer in either. A barber's pole timer appears but nothing happens.
I've deleted the MediaDatabase.db3 file and restarted but there's no change.
I cannot find PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe to create a separate shortcut to it as advised elsewhere.
I want to run the slideshow element but this will not work without organizer.-
If you are not getting the "C++ Runtime error " (as you say "nothing happens"), this is not the forum post for your issue, nor is deleting the MediaDatabase.db3 going to be your solution.
The Elements Organizer is stored in a different folder than the Elements Editor. Check C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements 9 Organizer.

I'm getting this error message for elements 10 -- Runtime Error!
Program:..\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 10\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
It works if I rename the db3 file one time. Once I close the program a new db3 file is created.
I've tried re-installing and the problem is still there.-
So the question becomes: What about your computer is causing the DB3 file to become corrupted so fast?
Have you installed any extra content in PSE (plug-ins, templates, actions, etc)?
Have you tried running the application from a different user account?
What sort of applications do you have running on the computer? Especially those running the background. -

I had this same problem a couple of times as well (Once with the trial version of PSE10 and once after I purchased the license). I did a complete uninstall through Control Panel, then a re-install from a fresh download. Haven't seen the error since.
