Photoshop: Problem with changing Smart Object's canvas size

I often manage layers by grouping them into Smart Objects. If I open a Smart Object and change the size of its canvas, it distorts (at least shifts) the Smart Object back in the main file.

Yes, because you changed the size of the child document - and the size in the parent has to update to keep it from getting distorted.

Photoshop honors physical size first for smart objects. So if you change the resolution of a child document, that should not affect it's size in the parent document. But if you change the physical size or aspect ratio - then the transform in the parent must update.
