I’m frustrated that I can't get this resolved quickly.

Photoshop Elements: Organizer Won't Display Photos From Files

I recently upgraded to OS Lion on my iMac i3. Prior to the upgrade PSE 9 Organizer worked flawlessly. Now, I am unable to view my photos in the viewer. I can see the folders in the list, but no images (jpg) load in the organizer. It displays as if the folder is empty or it contains a file that is not applicable. However I can go directly to the folders in my directory and there are all my files (photos).

Any workarounds to correct this issue? Antone else experience this problem when they upgraded to Lion?

  • I’m really disgusted with Adobe. I have never had such bad performance from their software.
I tried deleting preferences, this didn't work. I tried a reinstall and this didn't work either. Actually it won't display on photos. It just shows the files in the folders list. There are certainly pictures (files) in these folders, but Elements doesn't see them for some reason. Any other thoughts?

  • On selecting a folder only the files that have been imported in Elements Organizer are shown in the grid.

Such folders are marked with the icon attached below.

  • Yes of course Ankur. Sorry, I should have been more specific. The import continues to fail and won't import any of my photos. It gets about 95% completed and fails. I have over 100,000 photos. Does anyone know why PSE doesn't just see the files, why is an import necessary? NIKON's free software allows you to view your directory and recognizes common image files. Does PSE 10 require an import into the organizer? Is PSE 10 more stable? If so it would be worth th 100 bucks to me to upgrade.

  • It could be a problem with your catalog because of which your import is failing.
Try after repairing the catalog or import files in a new catalog.

Following are the steps to repair a catalog:

    - 'File' Menu --> Catalog ('Catalog Manager' Dialog will open)
    - Select the catalog that you want to repair from the list and hit 'Repair' button
    - Hit 'Optimize' button also.

Following are the steps create a new catalog
    - 'File' Menu --> Catalog ('Catalog Manager' Dialog will open)
    - Click 'New' button to create a new catalog

All versions of Elements Organizer require import of media.

    I’m curious
I'm still not sure what the issue is here. Is it:
    a. No thumbnails appear in the Elements Organizer.
    b. You cannot import images into the Organizer.
    c. You do not see thumbnails in the import dialog box.

If the problem is a: The thumbnail cache is probably corrupt. Go to the catalog folder (by default: Users/[Your User]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs/[Catalog Name]) and delete the file "thumb.5.cache". Then relaunch the Organizer.

If the problem is b: There may be an issue with a specific file that you are trying to import. Instead of trying import all 100,00 images at once, do it in smaller batches. If you have folders, try importing individual folders, or groups of folders. Likely you will find that most of your files import just fine. By process of elimination, you will likely find that one or more files will not import into the Organizer. Looking at those files individually will be the only way to find out why they won't import.

If the problem is c: The import dialog is created using the OS. We don't produce the thumbnails that appear in there, Mac does. So we wouldn't be able to do anything if those were not showing up.

Would it be possible to post a screenshot of the problem so we can get a better understanding?

  • Hi Brett,

It seems that the import of media is failing in user's catalog. The reason for this could a corrupted catalog.
That's why I've asked user to create a new catalog and import again.

  • I’m bummed that Adobe is creating such mediocre products.
    Hello Brett and Ankur,

Thank you both for your input. Ankur I have tried your method to no avail. Brett, my issue is 'A' and 'B'. There was no file titled "thumb.5.cache" in my catalog folder. The thumbnails do appear in the dialog box so there is no issue with that.

I have included a screenshot below. It does seem that I can import small batches. As you can see there are 2 folders with thumbnails. However my first import when I purchased Elements allowed me to do it all at once, not file by file. I am certainly disappointed that Adobe would be so mediocre in this area of their programming. The other disappointment is that I am unable to stretch the dialog box to see which files are corrupted according to Adobe. If I was able to identify the batch of files I would relocate or delete them. The information that appears in the dialog box is useless since I am unable to see the path. I will continue working on importing in small batches and see how long this fix will last. I will post an update.

    • According to your screenshot you are not importing image files. DB1, DB2, and NLA are not image file formats. That is why you are getting an error when attempting to import.

Also from your screen shot, you are in Folder Location View, which shows images from the currently selected folder. The folder you have selected has no images imported from it. On the left you can see two different folder icons: the plain manila folder and a folder with a blue square. Those folders with the square have images imported from them. Select one of those two folders and you will see your images.

  • In addition to Brett's reply, you can switch to 'Thumbnail' or 'Import' view.
