Photoshop Elements: Can't open Canon EOS T2i CR2 File

I've having trouble opening CR2 Files with Photoshop elements 8 program. It mentions that its not a supported file type. I also have the UF Raw program that has the ability to change the file type to TIFF or JPEG however, don't you lose quality in your photos?

ACR must be updated specifically for each camera and Adobe only updates ACR for the current version of PSE whenever the camera was first released.

PSE8 was the current version of PSE from the fall of 2009 to the fall of 2010, so if your camera came out during that timeframe, then you just need to update your ACR plug-in to the version that supports your camera but is also old enough that it is compatible with PSE8.

If your camera came out after PSE9 had already replaced PSE8, but before last December, then you can buy PSE10 and update it to ACR 6.6 and your camera should be supported--you'd want to check the "supported cameras" list for ACR 6.6 to make sure your camera is on the list.

If your camera was first released after last December, then it won't yet be supported by PSE10, and you could wait until PSE11 comes out for sale this fall, if past release schedules are any guide.

If your camera is newer than about May then Adobe probably doesn't' support it, yet, and you'll have to wait for the next ACR update.

If your camera is new but older than May then you can always convert your CR2 files to DNGS using the latest DNG Converter (7.1 currently) and open those DNGs in older Camera Raw (ACR) plug-ins from PSE8, for example.

If you tell us what specific model of camera you have, someone can tell you which of the above scenarios are possible.

  • Wow! Thank you so much for the quick response! I'm using a Canon EOS T2i. Looks like it was release in March in 2010. Please forgive as I am very new to Adobe and its terms What does ACR stand for exactly and where could I download these plugins..especially the DNG converter. Thanks

  • ACR = Adobe Camera Raw or just Camera Raw and is the plug-in for Photoshop and Elements so they can read various camera raw files.

The link I added as a comment just above is where you get the updates for things.

Change the dropdown list on the downloads/updates page to Camera Raw for your computer type and click Go, then find the Camera Raw that was released the closest after March 2010 and I think I’ll still be compatible with both your camera and PSE8. Once you click to that specific version of Camera Raw and get to it's download information page, look for a link on the page that mentions being specifically for Photoshop Elements, and click over to that page and download and install the update you find there.

  • Thanks you have been really helpful.. I'm goin to have to contact Adobe tomorrow because the camera raw updater said that this patch is not applicable to me. I've windows 7 so I'm not sure what the problem is. Thanks for again for your speedy response.

Adobe may not talk to you because you're asking about an obsolete product.

What version did you download and try to install?

The version you want is the ACR 6.1 Update for PSE 8 on Windows.

There is no patch installer for it, just a ZIP that you extract files from and run the CameraProfiles.exe then copy the Camera Raw.8bi file you've extracted to the proper folder. The patch installer comes with the much newer versions of Adobe products or more expensive things like Photoshop.

Here is the direct link to the PSE8 ACR 6.1 update page for Windows:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/download...

    Follow the instructions.

  • I downloaded the camera raw 6.3 orginally but I downloaded the 6.1 that you posted. Which folder do I move camera raw.8bi file to..Do I put it inside of the plug-ins folder for photoshop elements.

I think ACR 6.3 came out near the end of the year, after PSE9 was the current version and wouldn't be applicable to PSE8.

The web page says exactly where to put it, it says “read carefully” or something similar next to that part of the instructions.

There should already be a Camera Raw.8bi in the folder if you have the right one. You might want to rename it to camera raw.bak before copying the new version into the folder.
