Photoshop CS6: Save for web window mostly black and unreadable
Trying to save for web. The window pops up and is mainly black even over the text, which is black which means I can't see any options. I have tried changing the background settings but this makes no difference. Please see image.

1This appears to be caused by corruption in the OS install, possibly by files removed by "cleaner" utilities.
Reinstalling the OS, or installing a newer OS seems to solve the problem for the few people that have encountered it.

I've arrived at this party a bit late but I just want to confirm that Chris Cox has pretty much nailed the simplest solution to use. Reinstall OS X.
Like others, I tried a few things before I managed to find this thread. When I read Chris' suggestion I just about choked when I saw "Reinstall the OS" thinking I'd be spending the next two or three days reinstalling a ton of stuff.
For those of you that might have the same reaction there is an easy and non-destructive way to reinstall OS X that I wasn't aware of until now. I have to admit it's pretty slick. Slow, mind you, but it worked like a charm and (so far) I haven't found anything else that needs to be reinstalled. I should note that on the Mac Pro here that had this issue I'm running OS X 10.7.5
First, make note of your Apple ID because you will be asked to log in to the App Store during the installation process.
Now, restart your computer and hold "Command - R" and OS X Recovery launches. Choose "Reinstall OS X". You will get asked to enter your Apple ID. Assuming all is fine with your Apple ID the download and install just happens. You have to be really patient because it will take a while for it to complete. Perhaps a few hours as was the case for me.
After the installation was complete I ran PS CS6 and there was a Java thing missing that needed to be installed before PS would run but Software Update found and installed it automatically. After that, I went right to doing a test "Save for Web" and there it was... a perfect Save for Web options window.
Like others here I use MacKeeper as well. Whether or not I deleted something myself or with MacKeeper I'm just tickled pink that the problem was solved with a minimum of pain. I will definitely be more careful when I choose what to clean up with MacKeeper next time I use it.

That looks like an OS setting or a video driver glitch, but it's not something I've seen before.
SaveForWeb doesn't have the dark UI look of the application -- it should look the same as always.
Is there any chance that you copied plugins from a previous version of Photoshop by mistake?
Or do you have any system utilities that modify the appearance of UI elements? -
-
Thanks for the response. I have unistalled everything, all past copies of CS, and have re-installed and I get the same thing.
I have looked to see if there is anywhere in utilities to change the UI but can't find anything. Its very frustrating as I use this function often and at present its next to useless to me.
I don't know much about OS or the video driver but would it not seem a bit odd that it only happens in the 'SaveForWeb' window?
Thank you very much for your help. Any suggestions welcome-
I don't know. That is not how it appears for other users. The only time we've seen anything close was when someone had a system utility that tried to change the appearance of the UI (and failed badly).

Oh... guess I have to live with it then! Its strange that I didn't have the problem in Photoshop CS4 or version 3. I'm using all the same hard where, with no UI apperance changes (don't know how to do that). Guess i'll have to reinstall one of those, just seems like a backwards step (not to mention a bit of a waste of money). Ho hum.
-
No, you need to figure out what is wrong with your system that is hosing the UI of applications.
It could be a corrupt OS install, a haxie, or another application (rare, but possible). -

I have also switched graphics cards (as there are two in my mac) but have had no joy
-
-
Also I have experienced some other problems with layers becoming partially deleted, which is odd

I'm having the same issues on my new install of CS6. Photoshop Save for Web UI looks fine for a week then all of a sudden I got the blacked our UI screen. Any ideas? I had CS5 but made sure to uninstall and still not fixed. Thanks

Menu? SaveForWeb is a rather large plugin.
The installer does error checking before and after installing. So that's not too likely. And SaveForWeb only writes your files and it's preferences. It's possible if someone modified the installer that a bad file could be created (like if IT tried to customize the installer). -
-
IT didnt customize the installer. I logged in and installed directly from the creative cloud. Downloaded Adobe Application then downloaded each application from there. Everything else works great. Flash, Illustrator etc. The "Save As" menu and "Print" menu look fine in Photoshop too. Just the "Save for Web" window is an issue.

still no joy for me. I installed using a CD and believe its Photoshop Extended. I have tried setting up as a new user and logging in just in case there were some old presets. To be honest I feel like I'm clutching at straws. Fingers crossed a patch will come out, or the Photoshop team discover where conflicts may occur when using with other applications / fonts / OS or whatever the problem is. I don't like being fobbed off, and it feels a little like we are!

We can't solve an issue we've never seen. We need to know how to reproduce the problem, then we can try to find the cause. We either need access to your system, or for you to do some troubleshooting on your system.
We're not blowing you off -- but only a few people have seen this problem, and none of them are at Adobe. We've testing on thousands of configurations, and never seen this -- so we have no idea what might be causing it. -

OK. I'll keep hackingh away at it and let you know when I'm able to figure it out

still no solution. Adobe had a tech take over my machine and all they did was uninstall and re-install the software... didnt work. Very frustrating. I just want the product to work

Try deleting your save for web preferences here:
Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Plugins/Adobe Save for Web CS6/Photoshop -
-
Doesnt work. Already tried that. Plus, I tried creating a new admin user and Photoshop "Save for Web" is still having the same issue. So, I know it's not a user specific issue.
I know an element is missing. I think mackeeper was used and deleted some important files.- view 3 more comments

Can we use process of elimination? If both Christopher and I uninstalled and re-installed CS6 than, it has to be a file or resource that's not included in the install process. So, we can narrow the issue to a file or resource that's outside of the CS6 install BUT links to CS6 for the menus. Would we be able to locate all the files and resource that CS6 links to on the user's machine and then re-install/replace just those? Does this make sense or would this not work?
Thanks

Other than preferences, everything is included in the uninstall and install process -- except for the OS and other applications or utilities, of course.
That means it isn't a resource or data file that's part of Photoshop.
So, we're back to looking for something outside of Photoshop, like some utility or haxie that you both have running. -

I use mackeeper but haven't run it since reinstalling the CS6 suite and still have the same problem. My OS is the the latest possible on the mac (not near my machine so can't tell you the exact numbers but 10.7.4 rings a bell)
-
-
Christopher, do you have CS5 or (CS5.1) on your machine? Could Mackeeper have deleted something from CS5 that caused issues once CS6 was installed?
-
-
Okay...I have the exact same issue in my CS6. Also running Mac OSX (10.7.4). Also ran a MacKeeper "clean" recently, though I did not ask it to clean Pshop and honestly am not positive the black Save For Web window issue happened before or after running MacKeeper.
So...has anyone made any progress on this? -
-
**BREAK THROUGH** I have updated my operating system to Mountain Lion and the SaveForWeb function on PS C6 has returned to normal. Phew!!
-
That makes it sound like it may have been an OS corruption causing the problem. (which helps explain why so few people can reproduce the problem)
Of course, it still could have been a haxie or utility program on the old OS that didn't get carried over. -

Good news...sort of. I generally wait a while before stepping up to the next OS. In fear of OS vs Adobe (and other apps) bugs.

I am on a Mac 2 x 2.26 Quad-Core Intel Xeon desktop, running OS 10.7.4
I just upgraded Photoshop CS5 to 12.0.4, and unfortunately that hasn't fixed my problem.
Some of my dialog boxes (Save for Web, artistic filters) are black. I can see the preview image and the buttons, but none of the settings (the text is black on black). See attached screen capture.
This doesn't happen on other dialog boxes, such as Save or Gaussian Blur.
Have you ever seen this before? It functions, but I'm literally working in the dark.
Thanks,
Jill

Greetings. Updating to Mountain Lion fixed mine.
I use Mackeeper and from now on I will not do a fast cleanup and delete the binary files. Emailed their support people and that was probably what happened before.
Just wanted to share. Thanks so all of you guys for posting responses. This so helped me!! Have a great day. -

Greetings. Here is what fixed my screen.
• updated to Mountain Lion
• Don't delete the Binaries Cleanup files in MacKeeper by doing Fast Cleanup. Emailed the MacKeeper support people and that probably goofed things up the first time in Photoshop.
Hope this helps others like this post helped me. -

I have the same problem with Save for Web, I didn't use MacKeeper.
I'm not going to/shouldn't have to update my OS to fix this.
If it was fixed by installing Mountain Lion, it would probably be fixed by re-installing any OS, in other words, it's being fixed by overwriting something that has happened during the Photoshop install.
This is an issue for Adobe to fix.- view 3 more comments

Yes I read. Someone managed to fix a problem with Photoshop by reinstalling their OS. Therefore the problem must be solved. Pointless forum.
-

No, multiple people solved it by reinstalling or upgrading their OS.
Also, we ruled out the Photoshop binaries and preferences (which is all Photoshop has on the system). -

Another option is trying to figure out what files MacKeeper removes. I just bought my Macbook Pro, brand new with the latest version of Mountain Lion. So I'm doubting it has anything to do with a "corruption in the install" and more to do with MacKeeper cleaning. I tried asking them myself but got lame answers that didn't go anywhere. I don't think the person I was chatting with understood what i was describing.

We do not know which OS files it is dependent on (because there are thousands of OS files, and the connections between them are not very clear).
We know exactly which of our files, and normal OS files it depends on -- but somewhere there is an OS dependency that we don't know about (and some tools delete). -

You're welcome Chris.

Thanks, Dave - worked just fine.

I can confirm that this solution mentioned by Dave worked for me recently too. I had the same problem after running Mackeeper scan and after painlessly re-installing the OS, the problem was resolved.
