Ever since I upgraded to a Nec 3090, 30" monitor, I have problems with importing in LR 3.3 3.2 etc. This problem does not occur on LR 2.x or 1.x.
If I am running the monitor at 2560 x 1600, and I hit import. LR will freeze totally. I can't recover the system without a total power off. If I drop the res to 1900 x 1200 on the same monitor it works fine. The freeze is where LR3.3 would open the GUI drop down where on the older versions of LR you just get a windows dialog box.
I have noticed that if I minimize the LR window to less than 1/2 of the screen on import then it works at 2560 x 1600. However this is a pain.
Usually after I have finished importing, I can take the window back to full screen.
System is XP 32 bit, 8 Gb of ram. Video Nvidia GEforce 450.
I have the 3GB switch turned on.

I’m
happy
Paul, good to turning off the 3GB switch on boot of XP works.

I’m
confused
The problem doesn't occur with 2.x or 1.x using the same 2560 x 1600 res 30" monitor?
Also curious why you're running XP and not a modern 64bit OS like Win 7. -
-
Not sure why the confusion.
Net, as stated before.
Problem happens with any 3.x version of LR only. I can import fine with 1.x or 2.x at the highest res. 2560 x 1600. If I try to do this in LR 3.3, when the import GUI should open, the entire machine will freeze. There is no way to recover if you are at a full screen view. If you try to run task manager you can't see it since it's behind the full screen of LR. Only way I have found to get out it a power off.
If you open LR 3.3 at 1/2 screen view or less, you can usually get the import GUI to come up.
XP is still a fully viable 32 bit OS. If I needed a 64 bit I would be using Win7 Professional.

This could be due to memory fragmentation from the 32-bit OS. Lightroom really taxes the OS due to the large number of fairly large files it processes. XP-32 tends to have a lot of issues with this, and we've run into problems with its memory management ever since 1.0. It runs much more smoothly on 64 bit systems, and I suspect it would solve your problem.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, Windows XP-32 can only see and use 3 or 4 GB of your 8GB of RAM. The rest of it is going to waste. -

I’m
undecided
I'm running a 32-bit version of Win XP and if I change my resolution to 2560x1600 and run Lightroom I am able to open the Import window without a crash. I agree that most likely this is a memory issue, but does this behavior happen in a new, blank catalog? Perhaps there is a background process gobbling up resources? -
-
I would agree it's memory related. No other processes that I can control are running. I usually run this machine with the 3GB switch turned on. I am wondering if LR 3.3 was allowed to use the 3GB switch? With XP I believe the limit of ram for any app is 1.7GB unless you have the 3GB switch turned on. CS3, 4 and I believe 5 all will work with the 3GB switch. I boot up later today with it off and see if I get any diff.
I fully agree also that a 64 bit OS should work better. However this machine currently works well in the roll I have it.
What still confuses me is why screen res has any impact. I thought that with any video card with a CPU, screen res would be controlled by the video card. Obviously this is not the case with XP since if I drop the res down to 1900 x 1200 it works fine.
Paul Caldwell-
The screen size matters because Lightroom has buffers for the image in memory that are dependent on the pixel count of the image on-screen.

I was able to resolve this by turning off the 3GB switch on boot of XP. Import works, slowly but does work. Interesting that the 3GB switch would cause such conflict.

Ian, I forgot to credit you here, however I did on the Luminous Landscape Lightroom forums, sorry for the slight.
