Photoshop: Arrow key's stop working in type tool / text in CS6

When using a type/text area in PS my keyboard arrow key's sometimes just stop working. There's just no more feedback and I have to restart PS to 'fix' the problem. This is a very annoying bug which really degrades my productivity!

    Howdy Sander,

When you say that the arrow keys quit working, what do you mean? Within the text layer itself? You're no longer able to move your cursor? Or in other pars of the app? What OS are you running? Can you get this bug reliably? Could you share more detailed steps?

    Thanks,
    David

  • Hi David,

    Thanks for replying!

When working in a paragraph text layer (copying, selecting, pasting etc.) the cursor stops responding. I can't move it through the text. This happens most of the time after making some adjustments in the character or paragraph settings window. I can reproduce the bug when adjusting the leading:

    1. Create a paragraph text 'box'
    2. Add some text and confirm with the enter key (bottom right of numpad)
    3. Select text again (just some words)
    4. Adjust leading
    5. Enter to confirm
    6. Select text again and the cursor is refusing my commands :-(

I'm running OSX Lion and Creative Cloud. Before installing CC last week I did a full clean install of OSX so there's absolutely no clutter from previous Adobe versions or questionable software.

    Thanks,
    Sander

  • I have experienced this problem as well. Usually have to confirm the text, then switch apps (e.g. - from Photoshop to FireFox). Once I return to Photoshop, I can use the arrow keys within the text box to move the cursor.

Hi Christopher (and others - especially David),

There's still no satisfying answer from Adobe about this issue which I find very frustrating. It already made me pretty angry a couple of times when working on a deadline, and I'm a 'never-angry-kind-of-guy' :-s

    Please Adobe, fix this!

    Howdy Sander,

I cannot reproduce this problem at all. I've tried on multiple machines, but everything is running smoothly for me. I've tried both the Creative Cloud version as well as the Perpetual install (there really shouldn't be ANY difference, but I'm just trying to be thorough). I'm guessing there's either some little step missing or another app triggering this. Do you get this all the time? Could we do a connect session to get to the bottom of this?

    Thanks,
    David

I have this problem. Had it in the beta, too. It's unbearably frustrating.

While in this state, Photoshop also will not respond to shortcuts, such as fn+return (to commit text and leave text editing mode)/

I seem to be able to reproduce it fairly consistently:

    1. Focus an existing piece of Paragraph Text (by double clicking it in the Layers panel)
    2. Resize it

    Boom. Broken.

You didn't say how you were resizing, and we need enough details to the steps to reproduce the problem.

Do you have any screen recording utilities (like Jing) so you could record the process and show us what you're seeing?
    • Are you committing the resize of the text? If not, then the app is in a modal state and not responding to the same keyboard commands as normal, but rather those keyboard commands that deal with the transform (resize) which you initiated but did not complete.

      Thanks,
      David

  • I’m losing time
I'm also having the same issue in Photoshop CS6 where you have some text, in my case most times it is paragraph text, you click into edit it and place your cursor somewhere with the mouse then make an edit, the keyboard cursor keys stop working altogether so you can go forward or back or up or down in the text box. The only way to get around it is to mouse click somewhere else in the text string then try and see if the cursor keys work then - sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Also the DELETE key has the same issues, it doesn't work either sometimes, same as the arrow keys. This is super annoying as a full time graphic designer - it is driving me mental. Please fix this ASAP Adobe. I'm on an iMac 3.4Ghz i7 10.7.4 Build 11E53 Lion OS and all updates installed, just installed CS6 about 1-2 weeks ago, happening since install. CS5 is not having these problems.
    • view 3 more comments
    • I upgraded my version from CS5 which does not have the issue. Other than that, I have Outlook, MS Office 2011, Dropbox, Skype, Final Cut and about 20 other applications installed, but not all open, usually only Skype, Dropbox, Safari and Outlook with Photoshop. Closing any of these does not eliminate the issue, makes no difference. CS5 works without a problem, so it isn't my machine, it is the CS6 software failing from within the program itself. What should I do here - it is somewhat unusable?
    • Chris Cox (Sr. Computer Scientist) July 02, 2012 05:12
A few people have reported similar issues, and exiting their browser solved it.

Most people aren't seeing the problem - so that rules out a simple bug in the application. Most likely it is something else interfering, or some other factor that you left out of your description (like running a third party plugin, or some particular operation before this) that triggers the problem -- and we need to figure out what. But since we cant' reproduce the problem, and you can, we need you to help troubleshoot it on your system.

I too am having this problem now in CS6. Nothing's changed on my machine from when I had CS4 and went to CS6. I'm on OSX Snow Leopard, and have no external plugins for Photoshop. It happened right from the first time I used CS6, even in the beta version (which caused me to stop using the beta). Happens all the time using Photoshop now, I have to switch to another application and back to make it usable again.

Is there a menu we can look at for third party plug-ins or a dump we can provide Adobe - where do we look for this? What do you want to know, please be very specific. If you need more info, guide us to look for what info you want to know and exactly where to look.

    • Can you specify which Magic Mouse settings?
    • Unfortunately, I don't have that setup as I was helping a user via a connect session. There is a command under the preferences which takes control of keyboard shortcuts. When we tested it, there seemed to be a lag when that command was enabled. If you would like, I can try and walk you through it via a connect session today. I'll follow up with an email.

  • I'd like to reinforce what the others are saying that this is massively productivity-killing but difficult to say how to reproduce as it happens all the time. I don't think there are any designers in our office that aren't are having this issue (at least 4).

In my case for what it's worth, I'm running a completely up to date OS X with CS6 web premium (just PS and AI installed). I removed every trace of CS5.5 which had been previously installed. I often have Chrome, Firefox, Coda 2, Illustrator, Keynote, iA Writer as well as menu bar apps such as backblaze, colorsnapper, snapruler, droplr & sparrow open at the same time.

    I hope this helps!

    Hey All-

I think someone had mentioned this before, but if you are experiencing this arrow/delete key issue and you quit and relaunch Safari, it fixes the problem.

Very strange, but that is how I have fixed it. Will tell you how long it lasts if I find out.

  • I know 100% it is not a problem with browsers. We do have another machine in the studio and when we installed a custom font (Helvetica Neue Pro LT), it started having issues with the cursor keys like my machine. We uninstalled that font thinking we cracked the problem, but the problem persisted on that machine, which never had the cursor issues before. Something weird going on, now both machines have same issue with cursors and delete not working sometimes when editing text in paragraph text layers. I'll try turning off the GPU as above and work today then post again, standby.

Will this bug ever be fixed? It's slowing down my work flow as a UI designer incredibly, I'm expected to type stuff into Photoshop daily. Please don't make this an OSX problem, it's a CS6 problem. I can't use arrow keys or delete keys.

      Hi Hawken and Andrew,

We're quite happy to fix the bug if we can get solid steps to reproduce it. Unfortunately, each time I've worked with users on similar issues, it's been either unreproducible or user error or a device (such as Wacom Intuos5) or a companion app (Wacom sidecar app) or a font (Helvetica Neue) or another application stealing focus. If you have a clear case, we'd be HAPPY to help get to the bottom of the problem. We can share your screen via an Internet-hosted connect session and solve the problem or at least get a good idea as to the cause.

      Meanwhile, useful information includes:
      * what were you doing -- precise steps are REALLY helpful, such as:
      1) launch PS
      2) monkey around with blur filters
      3) create many layers of type
      4) switch between apps
      etc
      * what other applications you have running at the same time and if you've switched between them (I can't say enough that there is a setting for some tablets that EATS keystrokes -- see many other, similar threads). Please note multiple users with the problem have posted that closing Safari and/or Chrome fixes the problem...
      * what other devices you have running on your system, such as points, tablets, unusual keyboard layouts, etc.

Just like a doctor or car mechanic, we need detailed data to figure out what's wrong. We hear you're frustrated, but without a detailed list of symptoms and things you've been doing (or running) we can't really narrow down the cause.

      Thanks,
      David

Count me among the people who also have this frustrating, annoying and bizarre bug. Quite often, creating a text box, typing some text in it, and then trying to use the Left Arrow to go backwards to correct something shows nothing happening. Select All and clicking Left Arrow to jump to the start of the text also does not work.

    • Howdy Imran,

Did you read the previous comments? Are you running Chrome? Are you using a Magic Mouse? Have you checked your third-party pointer/mouse/keyboard utilities. We've heard about this problem several times, but each time the cause has been one of these. If you have clear steps indicating Photoshop, however, we'd be happy to walk through it with you.

      Thanks,
      David

PS Did anyone else experience that this web site was horrid to login to post this comment. I logged in with my previously registered ID, nothing happened, I had to refresh the page, repost (copy paste as I thankfully copied the text) tried with FaceBook login, which just sat there, and finally on a third attempt, was told a verification code would be sent to me... which took 10 minutes to arrive! I used that and even that refreshed the page to erase the text I had written. Had I not copied it already I would have had to type in the text again, which would be a pain if it was significantly longer.

  • I’m distressed brush
I'm also having the EXACT same problem.

Brand new machine, MBP running Mountain Lion.

First time ever using CS6, first PSD from scratch in CS6, noticed this problem right away while running a bunch of other crap.

Went back, tested, closing things arbitrarily and tested again to reproduce the problem. I was able to see the problem go away by some of the following: >> Closing Firefox, Closing Microsoft programs, Saving the File within PS CS6,

Short of it is this: it's not consistent.

I can boot up from dead, with a couple of things running in the background. Dreaded Symantec Antivirus. A Novell client for some shared drives. That's it. And still reproduce the problem while running only Photoshop.

A sequence of operations that I've performed to BOTH produce it and not produce it: >>

    Open Recent> select file
Move tool> Select Text Box Layer
    Nudge>Keyboard Arrow Up>nudge nudge nudge
    "T" Text Tool
Click Select anywhere in the same text box.
Keyboard arrow to Navigate the Paragraph is non responsive. Cursor remains still.

Sometimes I may change the leading or kerning on a line of text and then try to unselect it by the arrow key, and it will have become non-responsive.

Sometimes the behavior will appear only after I've selected several text boxes and modified text at least one of them.

The font for this file is, indeed, Helvetica Neue, but it came with the install, I thought? It's also the standard publication font for my work, so, I can't delete it. Nor can I disable Symantec. Nor can I downgrade from Mountain Lion.

I have an NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M Graphics Processor, which I disabled, by unchecking the GPU box. But I can still reproduce the problem and it sucks.

My personal workaround is going to be InDesign, for whatever I do next with heavy text, with the hope that this problem is limited to PS and not CS6 broadly.
    • Howdy Jason,

Just so you know, there have been some problems with various tablet devices on Mountain Lion, the version of Helevtica Neue which ships with the OS has had some problems, and Chrome can trigger keyboard interception as can other programs which "sit on top"/go semi-modal or monitor input. That said,
I'd like to follow up with you via a connect session, so we can get to the bottom of your problem. If we can isolate it within Photoshop, then we can fix it otherwise hopefully we can figure out a workaround.

      Thanks,
      David

  • I understand this being a complicated issue, given that the Adobe Employees are not able to reproduce it, and the numerous system configurations possible.

My thoughts are this though. I have had this same problem on two machines, both iMacs – one a 2007 and the other only one refresh old. So given that most of the responses have been about interference from other applications, I decided to do an entirely fresh install of Mountain Lion on both machines and, aside from the OS, install only Photoshop. Bam, still happens on both machines.

Since I have used these exact same machines to run CS5 (as well as having used Photoshop since version 4.0) and never had this issue before, I'm having a hard time with the idea that a clean install would still leave the ball in the users court.

I've seen responses saying that closing the browser solves the issue. I've seen responses saying that the magic mouse is to blame. Perhaps it's Mountain Lion.

My question is this, if I've done a clean install with Photoshop as the only application on the Machine, what are my options as a user? Safari is the default browser on the Mac. Magic Mouse comes with every new desktop Mac – as well as Mountain Lion.

If you were able to reproduce this issue you would understand exactly how frustrating it is when working in Photoshop eight to ten hours a day, five days a week.

      Howdy Derek,

I'd be happy to follow up with you and try to walk through the problem with you. I'll send you an email so we can set something up. Truly, we would like to isolate the problem and solve it for everyone; I think I can speak for Chris when I say we take user complaints seriously!

I'm not saying that this is the case with this problem, but it's been my experience with similar problems that it's usually a focus or workflow issue. But I know that new OSes can wreck havoc on widgets and sometimes the most bizarre constellation of apps can cause crazy stuff.

Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this soon,
      Thanks,

Whenever I am editing text in Photoshop CS6, my arrow keys do not work. I cannot move the text cursor around the text with my arrow keys. This starting to bug me a lot and I would like to know why it doesn't work, or how to fix it. They worked fine in CS5, it was since I updated to CS6 that they no longer work properly.

  • How are things progressing with a fix for this? I also find that the same issue applies to using the delete key, but not the backspace key (which stupidly on my Mac keyboard is also called Delete... genius) - I mean the one that deletes ahead of the cursor, next to the end key.

I can reliably reproduce the issue, then fix it, every time by doing the following steps:
    1. Go into a text box, select all the text, then change something such as the font size, line height, or any character value.
    2. Hit Enter to commit the text changes.
    3. Click back into the text box. Cannot use arrow keys.
    4. Exit the text box (esc)
    5. Click out of Photoshop, into another app, Chrome for instance.
    6. Go back into Photoshop, can click into text box and use arrow keys ok.

  • @Dan Harvey: YES

exactly... one important thing I'd like to point out about this that may help Adobe to hone in on this bug is that you need to press 'Enter' while the font size field is still selected. for instance you select some text, click on the font size field, and then hit the up arrow a few times to increase font size.

now at this point if i simply click on the text somewhere to deselect first and THEN commit changes everything is fine. BUT, if i hit enter while immediately after changing font sizes, while the font size field is still active, that is when the arrow keys (among other things) will lock up.

at this point the only thing to do is to switch to another app and back to photoshop and voila, everything is fine.

These steps reproduced on a Macbook Pro, early 2008, running 10.8.2.

  • I am running CS6 with OSX 10.8.2
My Mac Pro has a 2.8 GHz Quad Core processor
    and 2 GB memory.

I have the same problem, but am finding it seems to be happening when I have Safari open in the background. If I quit Safari, my cursor behaves itself again.

This isn't an ideal solution, but it does work.

  • I'm curious to see how many of you setup CS6 similarly to CS5. Meaning, do you guys shrink the main dashboard background and have your tools/pallettes floating, with other apps visible in the background?

I ran into the keyboard problems many times, and it seems the only way I can fix it is through switching from one app and back to Photoshop. However, the same problem keeps happening.

Then, I decided to try and use CS6 as it was intended with the dashboard background encompassing the entire screen, which makes you only focus on your photoshop canvases. This seems to have fix the keyboard problem so far. Will report if anything comes up.

  • I’m frustrated
It looks like it's been 7 months since this topic was originally opened. I've had CS6 for about 2 months now, and just noticed in the last week this same issue was happening to me. Incredibly frustrating as I cannot understand why a seemingly BASIC function of a computer just up and quits working. The arrow keys no longer work within a text area and neither does the delete key. I'm also noticing the font size isn't matching up either (this could be a separate issue), but occasionally an 18pt font (visually) will show that it's a 3pt font (no idea what is going on there).

Has anybody figured this out? The only thing I can do is restart Photoshop to make it stop, but it always pops back up. I've tried closing Chrome, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and other software but honestly WHY should I have to close these other programs down in order for the text tool to operate correctly in a different program? It IS a massive productivity killer (because here I am wasting time looking up the issue), as small as it may seem.

  • billy noah,
Yes, I am able to reproduce this now.

Looks like this problem occurs when you enter any numbers in Character or other panels then hit enter/return keys. Note: Application frame is on.

Workaround: This is a focus issue so try clicking desktop or another application or select application frame off.

I will work with type engineer.
    Thanks for your help!

So seriously Adobe... when is this going to get fixed. It is an incredibly obnoxious, workflow-breaking bug.

    Hi Tad,

What OS are you running? Are you sure you've updated to 14.2.1? What do you do when the problem comes up? Do you have any non-standard mouse or keyboards connected? Do you have any keyboard shortcut software or a tablet installed? If so which one(s)?

I'd love to help get to the bottom of this bug once and for all...!

    Thanks,
    David

  • I have 14.2.1 on OS X 10.9.2. I get the problem just using an apple magic trackpad. I am using PopClip. They disable their stuff for adobe products and I'm not able to get it to actually fail this morning, but I'll try turning PopClip completely off when it does and see if that makes a difference.

  • Ok David. I was working in photoshop up till I left work last night. I closed my computer and left (so it was asleep). This morning, I just tried it again and it's failing to recognize the arrow keys on text again.

I disabled PopClip to no avail. However, restarting Photoshop worked this time. So, maybe it has something to do with the computer sleeping. The last time I just came back from lunch so it did sleep.

  • ...and the same thing happened today when I went to lunch. (With my PopClip off.) So, I believe it has to do with going to sleep.

    Howdy Tad,

Can you get this problem reliably on your computer going to sleep? Have you tried actually using a mouse and completely disabling your trackpad? Ditto for removing PopClip (cuz many of these apps actually linger in memory)? I believe there's a problem, but since you're the only person voicing this, I'm wondering if there's something specific to your setup.

    Thanks,
    David
