Photoshop Elements: 2.0 won't run

OK...call me old school...I like looking at my photos initially in an old version of Elements 2.0. I work on everything in LR and SC4.
The end of last week the program quit opening. It would run through the start-up and as soon as it got totally open it would close. I deleted the program and tried to reload it from the CD and it wouldn't load it...so I did a restore to an earlier date and pulled it back up. Then it would load...but lost some of the program files...it wouldn't do all the functions. So I did an earlier restore...no luck.
So today, I made sure the computer was clean and pulled it back off. This time the program would load from the disk. Went to open it after it calmed down and it did like before...looked like it was loading but as soon as it got all the way open it shut down. Got any ideas what is going on?

What happens when it closes? Do you get an error message?

What might have changed on your system since it was working?

What OS version are you using?

  • When it opens it goes through the welcome/startup window and as soon as it finishes loading you see the main window open with the file viewer open. As soon as it fully maximizes where you can see the file viewer it is gone...closes with no error messages.
When I did the restore where it would stay open, an error message would open at the start that said that some files couldn't open because they could not be located. I think it was something to do with shapes. What the program would not do that I could tell from the limited use I did with it then was that it would not save a file for web and the text effects were no longer there.
What changed...well this is probably something since Adobe shares a lot of files...my daughter does lots of portrait work in CS4. She purchased some actions from another pro photographer last week. The actions still work in CS4 and I don't see any bugs in CS4.
OS is XP Pro 2002 serv Pk3

  • The error notification said " Could not load default custome shapes because the file could not be found." THis would come up after the system had been restored. Once the program was deleted off of the computer and then re-installed, no error notice came up...it just would close immediately after it opened.

  • It has something to do with Rad Labs Totally Rad plug-ins. I deleted their program and now Elements is back to normal.
Now......to figure out how to run both...

  • I'm not trying to run them in Elements...it is somehow sharing apparently that default custom shapes file and makes Elements close as soon as it opens. Sounds like a good reason to me for her to set everything up in her own computer and get her off of mine! ;)

  • This came from RadLabs...

What has likely happened is that RadLab installed itself into your Photoshop Elements folder as well, and now Elements is trying to load RadLab at startup (and getting upset). What we'll probably have to do is remove the shortcut that RadLab installed from your Photoshop Elements Plugins folder.

And just to help anyone else out there that may experience somthing similar...this is how you do the actual fix...
The CS plug-ins can and will attach themselves to other Adobe applications. Usually the files are written so they seek out the latest version of CS. However this particular group of plug-ins had a software update that applied itself to all versions of Photoshop. So it loaded itself into the old version of Elements I like so much.
Go to C:>Program files>Adobe> Photoshop Elements 2 (or the version you are having problems with) > Plug-Ins...Click on Plug-Ins and see what files are actually over on the right side and then scroll down till you find the plug-ins that don't belong...and delete them. They will still be in your CS plug-ins where they should be...and not in your old archaic version that is so easily used. There guys...now it is solved.
